Arranging and Rearranging

Over the weekend, I finally felt like turning on the sewing machine and working some old projects. Three quilts that were finished earlier this summer have been waiting for me to prepare backings, and I kept moving them from pile to pile. Part of my lack of motivation was the arrangement of my sewing room. It's a smaller space and one whole wall cannot be used because it has two doors.

Brenda and Marilyn helped move the tables around when they were here helping me unpack, and we settled on the arrangement shown above. It left me with a lot of open space, but I wasn't comfortable using the cutting table. Then it dawned on me that it was awkward to have the rulers on the left side of the table. I tried moving them to the right, but then I didn't have enough room to maneuver with the ironing board right behind me.

I pulled out the measuring tape and some did some figuring. I put painter's tape on the carpet for the size of the units and moved them around until I had a workable position for the three key units - the sewing cabinet, the ironing board, and the cutting table.

I moved the rulers to the right of the cutting table and placed the ironing board in an "L" shape next to the cutting table. The ironing board buts up next to the closet door and overlaps the cutting table where the rulers are stored. That leaves me with lots of room to handle fabric and to cut comfortably. The ironing board is accessible from both sides which will allow me to iron large pieces of backing fabric and quilt tops.

The sewing cabinet remained by the windows which look out on the patio and the street.

Most of the fabric stash fits in the closet, but there is also fabric tucked away in bins under the cutting table.

All the doors in the apartment are 36 inches wide. (note the opening behind the open closet door - that's a bathroom, and next to it is a door that opens into the living room. Those two doors make that wall unusable for anything else.)

Once I had the furniture rearranged, some of my sewing mojo returned.

  2. Oh that is soooo much better. Too often we forget we don't have to have everything next to a wall and the benefit of being able to walk around it is wonderful.

  3. Having the right work lay out and the tools WHERE you need them can make all the difference.

  4. That's a lovely space for sewing. I wish I had a designated room for it. All my rooms are so small that even if I had a whole one it would be a squeeze. Now it all lives in the dining room since we never use it anymore anyway.

  5. I like the "L" arrangement. It gives you work space that isn't facing a wall. There's nothing quite like getting your creative space organized to get the urge to create again.

  10. I really like your new arrangement. Isn’t it amazing how little changes like moving your cutting table and the rulers made such a difference? I’m glad you found a workable solution for you. Your closet is so neat and organized.

  11. So pleased you have come up with an arrangement that works for you. Its not always easy in the beginning to see how to fit everything in, but you persevered and now are ready to start stitching again.

  12. Hi Nancy! I lost track of your blog a long time ago and was glad to find you again! I really like how you rearranged it, lots more efficient! I'll have to go back and catch up sometime (somehow), but have read enough to see you've moved to the other part of our state. Hope it's all working out for you.

  13. That looks like a great arrangement. With sewing, there are a lot of parts, with the machine, the cutting and ironing. I'm sure you will be a lot more inspired now!
