The Social Dilemma - a recommendation

Image
If you regularly use FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, TikTok, and other social media sites, I recommend taking the time to watch The Social Dilemma which is available on Netflix. It's a docu-drama that is well written, presented, and produced: I highly recommend it. It includes interviews from several individuals who helped develop the various social media platforms. After watching this presentation, I guarantee you will not look at social media the same and may even delete your accounts.  More information can be found about The Social Dilemma  in this article on Wikipedia

Benny and Joon

Yesterday, while a thunder storm passed through my area, I watched a movie on Hulu . Benny and Joon is a good film - sad, funny, clever, and thought-provoking. I'd give it five/five stars. The film runs an hour and thirty-eight minutes. Johnny Depp and Mary Stuart Masterson star in this quirky romantic drama about two misfits who come together as a result of an unusual poker game. Aidan Quinn and Julianne Moore co-star. (Commercials are short and infrequent) If you have some time this weekend, you might enjoy watching it on Hulu or renting it at a video store.

The Power of Words

"I had a farm in Africa at the foot of the Ngong Hills . . ." ~ Karen Blixen ~ Those words have haunted me since the first time I saw the movie, "Out of Africa." I have no idea how many times I have seen this movie (probably dozens) but each time it fills me with admiration for Karen Blixen . Meryl Streep protrays Blixen as was such a strong woman. Each time I watch the movie, I tell myself that I need to read Blixen's books and stories research her life to see how much of the movie is based on fact. I haven't done that yet, but a quick search today gives me an idea. I still want to read Out of Africa and Letters from Africa , but for today, I am once more lulled into a different world and a different time by the words, "I had a farm in Africa. . ."

Local Boy On the Silver Screen

Having taught in a small Wyoming school (at its peak, an enrollment of 180 students in grades 9 -12), I don't often have the opportunity to say, "I knew him when. . ." or "I had the privilege to have him in one of my classes." Yet, this former student is the exception. I remember the buzz that went through the community when Matt (as I know him) modeled for a catalog. The buzz increased to a roar when he starred in the series "Party of Five" and progressed to the hit series, "Lost." I have been watching Matthew Fox' s career with great interest, and I admit that I am proud of his accomplishments. Last week a friend and I went to Matt's latest movie, " Vantage Point ." I was not disappointed. The film is not a typical suspense film and requires the viewer to evaluate the surroundings and the events as they appear. These events are shown from numerous "vantage points" during the film and soon the pieces fall in...
