The Fabric of Memory

Image
click to enlarge Recently, I went to the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center with some friends. I had been to the museum before, but I really wanted to see the featured quilt show, entitled The Fabric of Memory . The photo above gives an explanation about the show and those involved. Below is a sampling of the small, art quilts in the exhibit. Daily Chores Linda MacDonald Powell, WY The tag for Daily Chores stated, "My inspiration for this piece is the human spirit and how we can make the best of any situation. As detainees adjusted to their new life at Heart Mountain, they continued their daily chores, including wash day and gardening. They built raised containers for vegetable on the hillside and raised crops on the flats. These farming techniques were so successful that their crops supplied other relocation camps with fresh food, as well.  The clothes drying in the breeze are made from actual Japanese kimono scraps."  Peaceful Internees Carol...

Spring Squares

Image
Spring Squares 12 x 15 inches Yes, the binding on this mini is being held in place by pins, but that will be remedied soon. For some reason this mini challenged me more than the others that I've made. The white squares shown in this photo are 1 inch squares - that's tiny compared to the pieces I normally work with on the Quilts of Valor. Small pieces require near accuracy. Lucky Little Clover

Lucky Little Clover 12 x 15 inches Lucky Little Clover  is the small quilt featured on the February  Temecula Quilt Company  2015 calendar card.  My attempt at quilting circles leaves a lot to be desired, so don't look too closely. I'm pretending the crude quilting adds a bit of charm to this small quilt.  A commenter on an earlier post asked how these small quilts are used. Presently, I am hanging them on the wall of my sewing room, but they could also be used for placemats, for table displays, or for doll quilts.  Posts showing previous months:    January - Simple Stripe    February - Sweet Valentine

Sweet Valentine

Sweet Valentine 12 x 16 inches Sweet Valentine  is the small quilt featured on the February  Temecula Quilt Company  2015 calendar card.  Since I was fired up to sew at the end of January, I pulled some fabric and created this delightful small quilt. (Sorry that the photo quality is so poor.) Temecula Quilt Company is currently offering a new February project, called Hugs and Kisses , on their blog. Here are the links you will need to participate: •   Fabric requirements •   Block instructions •   Finishing instructions Check it out and create your own small quilt for February.

Simple Stripe

Image
Simple Stripe 12 x 14 inches Simple Stripe is the miniature quilt featured on the January  Temecula Quilt Company  2015 calendar card. The colored stripes are scraps from larger quilts and the sashing/binding a fat quarter purchased long ago. I pieced some batting scraps together and added some minimal quilting, i.e. "stitching in the ditch" to complete this miniature. The Temecula Quilt Company seems to specialize in mini quilts. Even though I am not a fan of working with such tiny bits of scraps, I hope to complete the monthly mini featured on the calendar cards I purchased in December. Do you like to create miniatures?

12 Days of Christmas - revisited

Image
12 Days of Christmas 16 x 20 Late November 2011, I was intrigued when the  Temecula Quilt Company  introduced a holiday miniature quilt along (QAL), called the 12 Days of Christmas . Beginning on December 1, 2011, the directions were posted on the Temecula Quilt Company blog for twelve days. Each block contained pieces corresponding to the day's number, i.e. the ninth day's block contained nine pieces. I faithfully finished the miniature blocks  (click on the link to see the original post). Then the blocks were shuffled from pile to pile and box to box in my sewing room for over four years. Temecula hosted the 12 Days of Christmas QAL again in December 2014, which jogged my memory of the completed blocks stashed somewhere in my sewing room. In early January 2015,  Bonnie challenged her blog readers to spend 15 minutes each week to tidy their sewing rooms. I took the challenge and began bringing some semblance of order to the chaos: I sorted patterns...
