Stealthy

Image
stack of “Stealth” blocks will finish @ 6 inches I think these blocks look like colorful Stealth bombers, so I’m going to name the finished quilt “Stealthy.” The blocks are on the design wall but are not sewn together because I want to play with them for a bit to find a pleasing layout. I may or may not use sashing between the larger blocks.  Not much has been happening here recently because I was sidelined by a virus of some sort. It wasn’t COVID, but it left me with a hacking and lingering cough. I’m glad I got the latest vaccinations in September because I think this could have been much worse without them.

Double Churndash

Image
Double Churndash block August 2020 This double churndash block is the beginning of another Quilt of Valor. The centers will all be different thanks to a panel of patriotic images from Jean F.  I plan to make two sets of blocks -- blue with red dashes, as shown, and red with blue dashes. The pattern is from a video tutorial from Missouri Star Quilt Company, entitled Double Churndash.

Around the Block

Image
two "Around the Block" blocks November 2019 Last month, I attend a Sagebrush Quilters' guild meeting. The group is very active and makes a lot of quilts for community programs. Members sign up to collect donated Blocks of the Month and then make a quilt out of the donated blocks. Around the Block was the design selected for October, and the finished blocks will be collected at the November meeting. I played around with some scraps and made two blocks. The pattern is on page 33 in Judy Hopkins 501 Rotary Cut Blocks . The blocks finish at 12.5 inches unfinished.

In the Wind

forty-six pinwheel blocks November 2019 The pinwheel blocks are finished and squared to 7.5 inches. They're an odd size, but I wanted to keep them as large as I could. The main fabrics and colors are consistent, but the backgrounds (grey, tan, and a light lavender) are different and could present a challenge. I'm considering a dark sashing to  pull them all together, but that may change when I start auditioning fabrics. I have a couple of layout/setting ideas, but again, the sashing fabric may dictate what I actually do.

Eileen's Stars

Image
Eileen's Stars 62 x 72 inches Quilt of Valor #170 Eileen's Stars was finished over the weekend, and I love how it looks. I used all of Marty's mother's stars . Parts of the stars were hand-stitched, and after checking each of them, I can attest that Eileen's stitches were exact and are very secure. It was my pleasure to turn these donated, star blocks into a beautiful Quilt of Valor.  Marty, thank you for trusting me to work with your mother's blocks.

Orphan Block Adoption

Image
sample blocks donated by Marty S. October 2019 Marty S. from TN contacted me a couple of weeks ago and asked if I could use some star blocks that her mother had made. She had fifteen of the large blocks and 24 of the smaller stars. I gladly accepted Marty's offer and look forward to turning them into a Quilt of Valor. When the blocks arrived, I gently hand washed them, gave them a good press, and then squared the big blocks to 12.5 inches and the small stars to 6.5 inches. While squaring the blocks, I came up with an idea and look forward to creating a QOV with Marty's mother's blocks.

Slow Progress is Still Progress . . .

Image
twenty-nine blocks ready to sew March 2019 . . . at least that is what I keep telling myself about the Tail Feathers' blocks. All the pieced sections are finished and ready to sew to the large triangles, so the blocks are closer to being completed. I had hoped to have the quilt top finished by now, but life got in the way.

Using Scraps

Image
stack of scrappy blocks April 2018 Remember the stack of four-patch blocks , I made from my 2.5 inch scrap bin in early March? I combined them with some half-square triangles to make twenty Jacob's Ladder blocks. blocks ready to be sewn together These blocks will become a Quilt of Valor similar to Melting Pot, made in 2015

California Thomas Fire Quilt Blocks

Image
four blocks for the California Fire Quilts December 2017 These four blocks are on their way to Carole ( From My Carolina Home ) who plans to make some quilts for those who've suffered from the Thomas Fire in California. The blocks are also being collected by the Ventura Modern Quilt Guild in California: here's the  pattern  link and mailing address is listed at the bottom of the pattern page. Update January 13,2018, read this post on Carole's blog about all the blocks she's received . The need for quilts is great, so I hope you can help by sending a few blocks to the Ventura Guild.

Welcome Home II

Image
Welcome Home II 60 x 73 inches Quilt of Valor #127 I used ten Patriotic Stars , seven of Teresa's orphan blocks , and three orphan blocks from the Two-Step mystery to create Welcome Home II. The orphan blocks were different sizes, so I framed them on two sides and paired them with the Patriotic Star blocks. The result isn't exactly what I envisioned, but I think it looks okay.

Afghan Knitting Project

Image
thirteen blocks for Afghan Knitting Project October 2017 I learned about the Afghan Knitting Project to benefit families of students who are being sponsored by  Project Amigo from Jeni V. (fiber guild member) and used wool scraps that another guild member (Katheryn E.) gave me for charity knitting. The project accepts both 5 inch or 6 inch squares (knit or crochet). I chose to knit 5 inch squares from Katheryn's wool. Some of the yarn that Ellen sent me will be used to knit more squares for the Afghan Knitting Project.
