star blocks in various stages July 2022 The last two afternoons, I've been working on the project I adopted from JulieK. When I work on blocks, I usually break things down into sections that I can chain-piece and prep for the next step.  Since Julie had everything cut out, it was easy to sit down at the machine and sew all of the flying geese units and press them. The next time I came back to the machine, I added the corner pieces to some of the flying geese, and sewed the side flying geese units to the center square.  twenty completed star blocks I finished the last star block at 5PM yesterday and placed them on the carpet for a photo right next to the small "rainbow" created by a prism in my living room window. Prisms intrigue me, and I have them hung in several windows to catch the afternoon sun. I've decided to pair these light blue stars with some stars made with a dark blue fabric from my stash. I hope to get the fabric selected and the parts cut out by the week...

adopting Julie's orphan project July 2022 Julie ( JulieKQuilts ) offered a few orphan projects to her blog readers, and I opted to adopt a set of blue stars that needed to a be completed. Julie did a lion's share of the work on this project by cutting all the pieces. They were even divided into individual groups.  In addition to the stars, Julie sent a bundle of star-studded fabric.  I'll add some additional blocks (possibly red stars) to Julie's twenty, blue stars (eight inches finished) to make a Quilt of Valor. Thanks, Julie for sharing these orphan star project with me. 

All Aflutter 63 x 70 inches Quilt of Valor #219 Two orphan blocks from Karen M. inspired this quilt, and they can be found in rows 3 and 4. This quilt went together quickly and without any problems: it was fun to replicate the blocks to create this unique Quilt of Valor.   Thanks, Karen!

using striped fabric to make star blocks April 2022 Over the weekend, I played with the block design of the orphan stars Karen M, sent me. I don’t save a lot of strings for the pieced, flag stripes, so I pulled two pieces of striped fabric from my stash for the flag. The printed stripes are the approximate size (1 inch) of the pieced stripes. Using the printed fabric made the construction of this block a snap.  The HSTs are 3.5 inches unfinished. The four cornerstones and the white/navy star unit are 3.5 inch unfinished as is the striped section next to it.The bottom striped section is 3.5 x 6.5 inches unfinished. This results in a 12.5 inches unfinished block. (If I didn’t use the printed stripe fabric, I’d use 1.5 inch strings to create the striped sections.) It didn’t take long to create the two replica blocks. I plan to make more from my blue and red scraps.  Thanks for the idea, Karen! 

orphan blocks and pattern leaflet from Karen M.  April 2022 Karen M. contacted me a couple of weeks ago to ask if I would accept some orphan blocks she rescued from a sale in her community, and a few days later, these two blocks arrived in the mail. I've been looking for a block project, and this design will be perfect.  You might remember that Karen sent a beautiful orphan star several months ago that became  QOV #207  which was recently awarded to a veteran.
