Quilt Eye Candy

Image
Quilt Show Riverton, WY January 2017 The squares on this quilt were tiny and the stitching was spot-on accurate. It was a "happy" quilt  a baby-sized quilt  I admire those who can work with tiny pieces of fabric and have consistent stitching. Unfortunately, I didn't take a photo of the quilt's information, so I can't give credit to the quilter.

Artful Quilting

quilting detail Winter Quilt Show Riverton, WY January 2017 Today, I'm sharing a bit of quilting eye candy. Once a quilt is finished, it is usually sent to a longarm  (a type of machine, not a quilter with long arms) quilter who typically adds texture and beauty to a quilt if the customer wants to pay for custom quilting. Judy Powell's gorgeous bearded iris quilt was displayed it at the Winter Quilt show. She made the top and did the machine quilting herself. quilting detail Winter Quilt Show Riverton, WY January 2017 complete quilt January 2017 This quilt with appliqué and detailed quilting was a work of art.

Quilted Traditions

Image
vintage quilt Winter Quilt Show Riverton, WY February 2016 The Winter Quilt Show had several vintage quilts on display, and it was the signatures on the blocks of this particular quilt that captured my attention. The quilt, owned by Jacque Harris, was given to her grandmother when she and her husband moved from Missouri to Pavillion. WY. The friendship/signature quilt clearly captured the cultural tradition of the time, as nearly every signature block did not identify the woman who signed it, but the identity of her spouse. I remember my mom and neighbor ladies were identified by their husbands' names as if they did not have an individual identity. My mother signed legal documents and checks with "Mrs." plus my father's name many years after my dad died. It was simply the way it was in those days. Fast forward into the late 1960s when I, too, made a signature quilt . I asked women to sign their names on the quilt blocks, which I later embroidered. O...

Door Prize

Image
bundle of nine batik fat quarters Last month I went to the Lander Quilt Show and shared some photos . After I made a purchase at one of the vendors' booths, my friend Sheri H. encouraged me to register for a door prize. I seldom win anything, so I was completely surprised when Katheryn E. texted me the next morning to tell me I had won. I selected the black and red bundle of fat quarters for my door prize. The bundle is so cute, I don't want to open it yet.

Feast for the Eyes

Zany Zebra was adorable September 2016 Friday and Saturday, the Popo Agie Quilters hosted their annual quilt show. Many beautiful and unique quilts of all sizes were on display. My eye was drawn to two red and white quilts, one of which was just plain fun! Who could resist the Zany Zebra? It was a delight to look at all the clever embellishments. Note the buttons, lace, rickrack, and fun fabrics. It wasn't a big quilt, but it was huge in creativity. The other quilt that captured my attention was large, but I only captured a portion of the top in my photos. I've seen this pattern before, and I always marvel at the amount of movement the pattern creates for the eye. Look at it a bit, and you'll see what I mean. all straight-edged pieces in this beauty that give the allusion of movement and curves The marvelous part about this pattern is that there are NO curved pieces. Check out the close-up to see the components of the quilt. I stood there and a...

The Fabric of Memory

Image
click to enlarge Recently, I went to the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center with some friends. I had been to the museum before, but I really wanted to see the featured quilt show, entitled The Fabric of Memory . The photo above gives an explanation about the show and those involved. Below is a sampling of the small, art quilts in the exhibit. Daily Chores Linda MacDonald Powell, WY The tag for Daily Chores stated, "My inspiration for this piece is the human spirit and how we can make the best of any situation. As detainees adjusted to their new life at Heart Mountain, they continued their daily chores, including wash day and gardening. They built raised containers for vegetable on the hillside and raised crops on the flats. These farming techniques were so successful that their crops supplied other relocation camps with fresh food, as well.  The clothes drying in the breeze are made from actual Japanese kimono scraps."  Peaceful Internees Carol...

Autumn Quilt

Image
Sunflower closeup Fabric dyed and quilt made by Barb David the colors are prefect for the flowers This Autumn quilt caught my eye at the quilt show in early February, and when I saw the quilter at the Quilt of Valor sew-in, I complimented her. Barb said it was created in a class taught by Phil Beaver in Jackson, WY. Part of the class was dyeing the fabric for the quilt. The colors were vibrant and perfect for the flowers, pumpkins, and leaves. Barb David's wall hanging created at the Phil Beaver class at Quilting in the Tetons.

waving flag block A patriotic quilt made by Beverly Hall caught my eye at the Winter Carnival Quilt Show in early February. I snapped photos of the individual blocks and may replicate them later. When I got home, I realized I didn't take a photo of the full quilt. The individual blocks were creative and inspiring. star heart star and stripes star flag Jacob's Ladder I don't know the name of this block. Do you? The waving flag and the star flag are my favorites. Which blocks do you like?

Quilt Show Eye Candy

close up of Circling Geese by Nancy Wright The Winter Carnival Quilt Show is an opportunity to see some gorgeous quilts, and this year's show did not disappoint. I love to see how quilters use fabrics. The blue fabric is gorgeous in this quilt, but I wouldn't have considered it in a fabric shop because it is so busy. However, it's the perfect fabric to balance the flying geese blocks. Circling Geese The braided border adds another layer of beauty to this stunning quilt.
