Fluff and Stuff

fluffy cotton from cottonwood trees
June 2021

It's that time of year when the air is full of "cotton" fluff from the area cottonwood trees. The fluff is a nuisance, especially on my patio where it rolls around on the cement and forms large globs. Whenever the door is opened, a fluff ball manages to sneak into the apartment. Some years, it blows through the air like snow.

I'll be glad when the trees stop releasing their seeds encapsulated in the fluffy "cotton."

  1. That would be irritating because they are light as a feather and probably hard to catch.

  2. Oh boy! I had forgotten about cottonwoods since we didn't have many near us in Spokane. But here. Oh my goodness. The lawns look white with snow right now. I drove by a lady mowing her yard yesterday and there was cotton blowing all around her from the mower. I don't know how she could even see to mow!
    Blessings and hugs,

  3. I love trees, but some trees.... grrrr. We have a bass wood on our lawn here at the townhouse. The bees love it, but after it flowers, it drops these hard little seed balls (about twice the size as a bb from a bb gun), there are litterally thousands of them and they are hard as rocks. They hurt to step on. AND they are hard to sweep up from the driveway, and impossible to get off the lawn. If they get wet, and there are enough of them, it's like walking on slippery marbles - I've almost fallen a few times. I will not miss that tree!

  4. I knew of cottonwood trees. I didn't know they actually make "cotton".

Our pollen this year has been awful. I'm not sure what kind of tree it is, but it has long "wormy" pollen "holders". It is right over where we have to park our cars. My car doesn't go out much and it was COVERED (almost) buried in these pollen worms and my black car was GREEN with pollen.

Everyone has been complaining about pollen allergies this year. Even people that usually don't have seasonal allergies have been bothered. Even Giroux was showing allergy symptoms.

  5. Oh my goodness Nancy!!!! I remember our huge cottonwood trees in Illinois. The cottonwood usually started on memorial day and then got like snow!

  6. The swimming pool in the little town we used to live in had cottonwoods shading the park, and this time of year it was hard work for the lifeguards to keep skimming that cotton off the water so it didn't clog the filters.

  7. I don't think I've ever seen a cottonwood tree. Too bad it's not real cotton! Then you could use it as batting!

  8. I have never seen that before. I thought we had it bad with the tulip poplars when they drop all their petals all over the place for weeks but you've got them beat. I can imagine the mess especially if it rains on them.

  9. OH it is just carpeting the ground in some places here...others have too much rain!

  10. Hum, is it time to gather the cotton balls an comb it, spin it, and weave some nice locally grown cotton? Tee tee!

  11. I understand what a pain they are and those seed sprout if they hit dirt!

  12. Oh, pretty to look at though! (Not inside!) When I was a kid, we had poplar trees that did that same thing and I used to collect it and make pillows and mattresses for my dolls...happy memory.
