Back in Time - Raking Leaves
dealing with the leaves approx. 1982 |
The trees around the farmhouse were huge and dropped truckloads of leaves every Fall. Before my Mom got a riding lawnmower that picked up the leaves, it was my job to rake them up every Fall. I didn't really mind the job, but it sometimes seemed never-ending. I often wish I had a penny for each leaf I raked.
Sometimes the leaves were raked into the ditch next to the house and burned, but often they were loaded into the pickup or the manure spreader and unloaded in the fields. Once my Mom started mowing up the leaves, she burned them near the front gate away from any buildings.
To this day, I love the smell of Fall and the sound of leaves crunching underfoot.
Do you like raking leaves?
I used to enjoy raking leaves. But the past few years I’ve avoided it because it really blows up my allergies. Those rotting leaves leave me gritty eyed and congested. My husband uses his riding mower and mulches those leaves. He uses the mower attachment to bag them. He fills the compost bins, and then dumps the leftovers down the ravine behind our house.
ReplyDeleteWe have a lawn company that comes and blows all ours away. My Dad usually mows over his with the mower (it mows it into a bag attachment) and into the compost it goes!
ReplyDeleteI don't like raking per se, but Fletch and I were just talking about remembering the smell of burning leaves - love that! But, it is illegal to burn them now around here. Fletch rakes up ours and spreads them in our raised bed boxes.
ReplyDeleteI used to love raking leaves, but my back doesn't like it so much anymore. I love, love the smell of leaves in the fall. It takes me right back to childhood and jumping in piles, then raking them again just to jump and spread them around more!
ReplyDeleteAt the house we had just before we moved to Spokane, we had a HUGE maple tree that we would rake 100+ bags off of every year. Then more would fall just as the first snow fell and they would end up being there till spring.
Blessings,
Betsy
My grandmother used to burn them in a big barrel in the back yard. She burnt all her trash too in those days. I used to love fall leaves until we moved here. It's a two month battle with them and there is so much to do. I run the riding mower with the leaf contraption on it while The Mister blows them. We do it once a week to keep up and we are now way overdue because of the wind. I hope when we do get back out there Mother Nature has taken care of them for us.
ReplyDeleteI still rake a few from around the trees so I can mulch them! I don't mind raking but my shoulder hates it:(
ReplyDeleteI love raking leaves, the sound of crunching leaves, and the smell of fall as well. That’s why it’s my favorite season. Great picture!
ReplyDeleteno no no ! But I love the smell of burning leaves. I don't like raking leaves. But i don't mind blowing them into the woods
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun shot! I can almost smell the crisp air. I enjoy yard work, but I don't rake leaves around here. I like the natural look. ;) I did however mow this afternoon.
ReplyDeleteOh, I have such wonderful memories of raking leaves with my Dad; we loaded them into a trailer behind the mower and took them out back for his mulch pile. Now he vacuums them up--and it is still never ending! lol
