Any Recommendations?
July 2020 |
I've listened to several audio books on OverDrive the past four months. If you like suspense and thrillers, you might enjoy reading/listening to books by B.A. Paris.
Behind Closed Doors was good (I finished it on Friday), but it was also one of the most disturbing books I've read. I forced myself to take long breaks because the narrator and plot were so believable. It deals with spousal abuse, and if you've known someone who has been abused, it can hit pretty close to home.
Can you recommend any authors or books that others might enjoy?
When I want an intense book I read books by John Sandford, William Kent Krueger, David Baldacci, Clive Cussler, Vince Flynn, Dan Brown - and many more. But when I want something just entertaining I go more for "cozy mysteries" and humor (Janet Evanovich). I don't often read biographies or memoirs. But I do read historical books - both fiction and non-fiction.
ReplyDeleteUse to listen to books but have gotten away from it.
ReplyDeleteI’ve pretty much given up on thrillers and suspense. Too intense for me. But I highly recommend the books by Nevada Barr. Anna Pigeon is a National Park police. The books are set in various national parks so you get a good understanding about the parks. I’d read them in order as things change for Anna as she goes to the various parks. I used to listen to these so I know they are available as audio books.
ReplyDeleteI went down the Stephen King rabbit hole and I don't recommend any of it to anyone. I must be in a pretty dark place to be able to listen to 48 hours of The Stand. Lol...
ReplyDeleteI used to read more thrillers and suspense type novels, but now don't enjoy them as much. I read memoirs and books about nature. Currently the novel I'm reading is Song Yet Sung and it is very good.
ReplyDeleteI prefer book in hand, so don't know if these are available in audio format. I am reading a book a week in 2020. Here are my thumbs up so far: The Book Thief, That's the Way it Always Is, The Dutch House, Dear Edward, The Girl with The Louding Voice, Late Migrations, Chasing Slow, Everything I Never Told You, Atomic Habits, Writers and Lovers, Valentine, All Adults Here, The Gift of Forgiveness by K Schwarzennger, The Silent Patient, I've Been Thinking (Maria Shriver).
ReplyDeleteIf you're looking for something a little lighter after that, and like supernatural fantasy mysteries, with a little bit of romance, I can recommend Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series - first book is Moon-Called. Werewolves, Vampires, Fairies, all in a modern world. They are light fare, but well-written. Whenever she releases a new one, I usually end up reading it all in one night. She has also written more "regular" fantasy novels (dragons, magic, etc) and all are very good.
ReplyDeleteI also enjoy Phillipa Gregory - she writes historical fiction, but focuses on the perspective of the women - she's done a whole series on the women from the War of the Roses, as well as the Tudor era.
I am reading the Glassblower Trilogy...I am enjoying it...especially at night or early mornings:)
ReplyDeleteI've been reading K-9 mysteries lately and learning a lot about Search and Rescue. We can get books from the library on the Kindle which is really nice.
ReplyDeleteDocumentaries are my favorites and anything along the line of learning about other people and countries.
ReplyDeleteI just finished, "The Seven or Eight Deaths of Stella Fortuna" a novel by Juliet Grames. Loved it! (perhaps because I am Italian?).
Like Elle, I like a book in hand. I like her recommendations as well.
I've only read Cheryl's minimalism book lately. I do have an old Jan Karon book ready to go too. Dennis read it a couple of years ago but I'm behind.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
If you have never read The Inn at Lake Divine, it is wonderful, funny and cute. I may have to reared it. Allison and I loved it. It may be 20 years old by now!
ReplyDeleteI just finished the latest book of Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes called Riviera Gold--I've read all of the books of this series and enjoyed them all!
ReplyDeleteI think this one is the 16th or 18th! I couldn't read the book about abuse-it would hit too close to home-I still have nightmares. My son was so hurt by her physically, emotionally and spiritually--she is twisted. I pray for the boys who have to visit her every other weekend. And she practices her twisted emotional pain on them. See? I can't talk about it....
