barn swallow nests
September 2021

My Mom called Barn Swallows, Mud Daubers, because of their unique nest construction. I spotted a whole community of nests on the historic stone building near the Blue Grass Irrigation Tunnel.

  1. Neat! We just get hornet and wasps nest here. Dave and I have spent a lot of summer destroying them around the house. I feel bad, but they were way out of hand here. Next spring I'm putting up some fake nests to see if will do some more natural control.

  2. That is so cool. I know we have barn swallows around here. I'll have to keep a look out to see if I can find any nests.

  3. Those are fun nests, but they usually have a mess below them....

  4. Interesting designs. The one on the far right bottom looks like it has a side car to the right. Did babies live there? And some have big entrances and some have little ones. Makes me want to make up stories about the nests.

  5. Here they're mostly called barn swallows but in Spokane I heard them referred to as Mud Daubers.

  6. How interesting. Are the nests left in peace to be used? I'm surprised the birds build them so close together.

  7. I remember my folks calling them Mud Daubers too. Haven’t seen their nests anywhere around her in ages. So fascinating to see.

  8. Now that is really cool to see--they used more mud/sticks/grass when I was in NY. I haven't seen any nests here in FL though we do see the swallows.
