Community Awareness

section of mural at First and Grand
Laramie, WY
August 2019

This mural is across the parking lot from the Gill Street fish mural.

Matthew Shepard, a University of Wyoming student, who was beaten, tortured and left to die near Laramie in October 1998 left a lasting impression on the community. Since that tragic event, the community of Laramie has focused on public awareness and tolerance.

  1. I guess I am not very good at art interpretation because I don't really see the connection with the hands and fish. Sad about the young man.

  2. Such a sad and horrific event. I agree with Dee - our whole country needs to be reminded that tolerance is needed. Your community can be proud that they are choosing to keep awareness up front.

  4. An interesting mural for sure, but I agree with the above comment, I can't see the connection between the hands and fish, but then, I don't understand a lot of modern art. So sad about the young student.

  5. I remember when that happened. Such a tragedy. I lived in a community some years back that had a Be Civilized campaign going on. (Now that I think about it, it definitely predated the current administration that doesn't see tolerant nor civilized overall.) I do love seeing all the murals you find. I keep an eye out but haven't had a lot of success finding them and capturing pictures.

  6. What beautiful murals! Thanks for sharing them. Tolerance is needed more that ever now; will we ever learn?

  7. WE were traveling with the kids and went in to Laramie for gas. I was so sad about that tragic murder. We still need more tolerance! We stayed near Kurt Gowdy state park in a beautiful home .

  8. Tolerance for all...what a thought.
Even tolerance for people who have different political views.
    Wow, that would be beautiful.
