My Sewing Space

my sewing room
January 2017
My sewing space, a 9 x 12 foot room, was once a guest bedroom, but it was rarely used. Once the trundle bed was removed, I gradually found a layout that worked in the small room, and I began sewing even more.

On the north wall is the pressing station that is actually two portable bookshelves and a large pressing board on the top. (photo in this earlier post)  I was working on a Quilt of Valor backing when the photo above was taken. To the right of the pressing board is my cutting station, a folding table on bed-risers to bring it to a comfortable height for me. I store finished quilts and yarn under the table: rulers and essentials are the table's far right as well as a wall full of reminders and notes.

The south wall has a portable shelving unit (four shelves) where I store my fabric stash. The old cotton shower curtain keeps direct sunlight off of the fabric. My machine cabinet was a yard sale purchase: the machine bed has a lift on it so the machine can be lowered into the cabinet. The cabinet is rarely closed. Behind the machine is a 4 foot folding table that supports larger quilts and keeps my thread stash (contained in large glass jars) nearby. Another shelving unit holds patterns and some pantry items.
fabric stash
No, this is not all my fabric stash - other fabric is stored in plastic tubs.

Do you have a room in your home dedicated to your hobbies?

  1. Fun to see your space and it is so organized! The room where I sew is also where a desk is (bills, etc. - yuck). The room has become a bit of a dumping ground and is one of my projects for 2017 (no more dumping!!).

  2. Thanks for sharing, fun to picture where you work to make the beautiful quilts you display. I also turned a former guest bedroom (after becoming an emptynester) into "Tam's Design Studio" with a desk, bookshelf, rocking chair, and yarn stash! It is most definitely my happy place. xo Tammy

  4. Looks like a very comfy place to work.

Sadly, I do not have a dedicated place to work right now. Hopefully, when we buy a new house I will not have to work at the kitchen table like I do now. LOL

  6. You have a comfortable and efficient space. I'm envious of that nice big window too. I do have a nice big room (basement bedroom) that is about 12 by 20 with a huge closet for my stash. But right now it's very unorganized and messy due to way too many projects laying around. I should do a post some day, maybe after I do some cleaning.

  7. Very nicely organized. YES. We have a room full of cubbies I
will show you all soon. I cant leave the yarn out though, as Fezzik will get at it. I keep my stash in a 3 drawer chest. So far he cant open drawers. He did catch and kill a mouse yesterday, so he's on the good list

  8. I am glad you felt you could take over this spare room that was rarely used and make it into a workroom for yourself. Great use of space in the home - nice to have the allocation of space so you can be more productive.

  9. What a lovely room. My sewing/quilting space is in the basement of my house and is the only finished room in the basement. Plus, it is one of the biggest rooms in the house. But because it is so big, it is hard to keep organized.

  10. Your sewing room is way tidier that ours is! Ours used to be a bedroom, too, but the bed is hidden right now by yarn. DH also had a computer here and I have my sewing machine which is also pretty messy at the moment. I need to get organized!

  11. Love the organization you have in your sewing room. We have a room that s supposed to be a guest room that we have made into the office and craft room. I have shelves in the closet that house my yarn.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  12. Yes, I have a designated room. In a home as small as ours it would be miserable not to have my own space (in our last home I only had a small corner of the living room, so I didn't sew or do much of anything creative). It looks like you've made good use of your space.

  13. That is so organized! I have a similar-sized room for my crafts, but it is a mess. And I sew somewhere else. I'm trying to find time to get my room into some kind of order.

  15. Your sewing room looks great! I think I would like my own room so I could leave out my mess. I just have my desk...and with all it's drawers it works great for me!
Your fabric is organized so nicely! :)

  16. So much fun peeking into your sewing space! Thank you for sharing it with us. It looks like a wonderful place to stitch up a storm! I don't really have a dedicated room for my sewing, but DH says I take up the entire house. LOL
