monk school Bangkok, Thailand December 1979 |
Last week's photo prompted some questions about the young monks, so I checked my travel journal to see if I had written anything about them. According to our group's tour guide in 1979, every Thai male was required to become a monk for three months. They were also required to serve in the military for three years. I don't know if these are still requirements.
How interesting....
ReplyDeleteWow! That is interesting. I do love their orange garb.
ReplyDeleteHow interesting. I know other countries that had brief military requirements - in past years at least. But never heard of the requirement of being a monk for a brief time. Such interesting experiences to take into adult life.
ReplyDeleteWow! That was really interesting. I had no idea anyone was ever required to become a monk. Thank you for the education today.

Every male? WOw that's just fascinating. Do you know how old they were at the time they had to be a monk?
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing that doing those two things might just help the young men to grow up and become productive adults.
ReplyDeleteI think a few of OUR young men could use a bit of that.
Interesting. I'll have to ask my DD about that; she spent a summer in Thailand in 1993.
