Winter Knitting

worsted weight, scrap yarn
January 2020
One of my new friends moved in October and asked me to take her worsted-weight, scrap yarn. I seldom knit with worsted, but I accepted her offer, thinking I would knit some hats or neck warmers to donate.

I haven't knit a hat in years, so I had to consult my stack of patterns to find the correct number of stitches to cast on. Many of the balls are small, so the items will most likely be striped.

All the scraps are Plymouth Encore, a wool and acrylic blend, that knits, washes, and wears well.

* yes, that's snow in the photo - the latest storm was two days after Christmas.

  1. That all looks so pretty in the pink bowl - even with the snow!! I don't knit with that weight yarn either, but I bet hats/cowls/whatever will go faster than using fingering weight. have fun with the stripes!

  3. I’ve been knitting up hats using leftovers of worsted weight acrylic yarn. I found a really nice pattern on Ravelry: Hats from the Heart by Wooly Bear Hand Knits. To an easy hat the uses a 2x2 rib all the way up. Since ribbing is so stretchy it fits a lot of head sizes. I, too, am making stripes.

  4. The colors look like they will blend nicely. Very good use of this yarn because someone out there will appreciate a warm hat.

  5. I was all geared up for some snow yesterday and it didn't happen. Just a few flakes after dark. If it's going to be cold it might as well snow. Cold rain is miserable and now we have wind...booooo.

  6. I've been using my scraps to make hats for the retirement home's charity. For the most part I'm using scraps of worsted weight. I use them in the mittens too. Your friends scraps are lovely as is the hat you're making. Where do you donate hats to in your area?
    Blessings,

  7. I love a good scrappy hat! We woke up to about an inch of snow this morning. And the temp has really dropped.

  8. Worsted makes a great hat and a pair of mittens! Enjoy!

  9. Acrylic can be so difficult for me to work with; it shows my uneven tension. It is hard on my hands. SO what did I do today? Took some blue and grey acrylic to knit a scarf for my uncle

  10. That will keep you busy a day or three:)

  11. Worsted hats should go pretty quickly and worsted sure does give you hands a break from the fingering weight yarns.

    Have fun.
