Weighty Topic

Weighted blankets are currently popular and are being touted as improving the quality of sleep; but in my opinion this is not a new idea. I remember sleeping under several heavy wool quilts when I was growing up, and to this day, I prefer to have one or more quilts on the bed. I also sleep better when I have a folded quilt at the foot of the bed. The weight of the bedding keeps me from tossing and turning; thus, providing a better night's sleep.

What are your thoughts about weighted blankets?

  1. I do find it interesting but I don't prefer weight on me-I sleep under a very lightweight comforter--no other bedding. I think it can be helpful for some--I want to make a kidsized one and see if they like it! Would your guild be interested in making any weighted blankets?!

  2. Hmmm, don't think I like. I prefer a light-weight (but warm) cover over me when I sleep. Fletch likes extra covers/weight over his feet and calves. My Mom used to talk about how the weight of heavy quilts when she was growing up was actually painful (but, then she was painfully thin as a kid).

  3. Maybe if I lived in a really cold area:)

  4. I have an Ikea Bimie which is a very old blanket that I love. It's fuzzy and it weighs a ton. Usually it's too hot for me but on night's like last night I used it AND one of their duvet comforters. I just couldn't get warm. Sometimes I just toss it over my feet. I never travel without it. It's truly my security blanket. Too bad they quit making them. I could use a new one. Mine's getting a bit ragged. Daughter had one but her friend burned a hole in hers with a cigarette. She was not happy.

  5. I'm with you. We grew up sleeping under multiple blankets or quilts which were very heavy. My husband likes having an extra quilt folded in half on top of him. He claims he sleeps better with it. The layers are too warm for me however.

  6. I guess we were ahead of the times. I always liked sleeping under multiple blankets in the winter. The weight IS comforting, but you certainly don't have to buy an overpriced specialty blanket. Well, not when you can knit, crochet or quilt. LOL

  7. In the winter we use several blankets for warmth, but usually end up kicking them off in the middle of the night. I don’t think it’s the weight that I like, but the warmth. However, even in the summer I can’t sleep unless I’m covered with something even if it’s just the sheet.

  8. I like feeling cozy, but I don't like things that are too heavy on top of me. I have an 80-pound dog for that ...

  9. I find if I don't sleep with weight on me my legs cramp even more often then they already do. We always used multiple heavy quilts and comforters on the bed, and over a year ago we purchased a "Coma Inducer" Blanket from Amazon, we do use this in combo with another comforter and we both love it. If we stay at a hotel or someones house we always have bad nights from the lack of weighted covering.

  10. Sometimes we use them at the hospital, and figgety blankets too. When I was young, we used about 4 quilts on the bed...and is was too heavy to feel a bit nervous, LOL!

  11. Love them! ...the heavier the better. You can make your own with poly-pellets.
I like being under that cover that the dentist puts on you for x-rays.
Some people love them others don't. It compares to the study Temple Grandin did on her college roommates with her squeeze machine (that was intended to settle cows in the chute).
You can google "hug box" and see for how much these sell.

  12. My husband loves heavy comforters, I do not. So I usually have one warm blanket on me! I cannot stand anything heavy on my feet.

  13. When I first saw these, I thought... well, yeah... duh... but I'm one of those people who needs weight to sleep. I sleep with a stack of quilts. Dave, however, can't stand weight when he sleeps. He's got one thin quilt for winter. In summer, he's barely covered.

  14. I have never seen a weighted blanket in person but I’m like you said I like a couple quilts on me at night and a cool room. Hugs,

  15. We made some of these several years ago in our church quilt guild for autistic kids. I'd never heard of them before that.

  16. I'm a fan. I've used them at school with students with autism, and I've always wanted one!

  17. I would be willing to give it a go. My husband likes to layer for warmth. My son is the opposite and he likes one comforter with a duvet cover no sheet to tangle in. I suppose I'm somewhere in between.

  18. Very interesting timing Nancy. Allison was given a weighted blanket from her friends for her birthday. IT is too hot for her. I sleep with a very heavy down twin sized blanket over me. I love the weight of it. Fireman doesnt so his side is only a blanket!

  19. I can remember my friend using weighted vest with her special needs students. And, a Thundershirt is a tight shirt for dogs to help calm them during thunderstorms. But me? Nah, I sleep with a sheet in summer and one quilt in winter unless it gets really cold and then we add an extra quilt. The special blankets are pretty expensive if I remember correctly.

  20. I've always thought I'd like a weighted blanket because I do like the feel of sleeping under several quilts.... But I was in Target recently and saw a weighted blanket in real life for the first time and Nope! It was so heavy, I think I'd feel trapped and claustrophobic laying under it.
