Back in Time - Rich's Game Room

Becky M.
Summer 1987
My brother, Rich converted the old chicken house to a game room and whenever we had company, the group ultimately found its way out there to play a game of pool or just hang out.

The linoleum was a good choice for the floor, but the color was not. It was impossible to keep clean and showed all the dust and dirt that was continually tracked in to the building.

From the photo above, you can see that one corner was also as a mini tack room to store the saddles that were infrequently used. The Budweiser wall hanging is actually a latch hook rug.

The doll sitting on the console stereo was one of Rich's Christmas gifts in 1986. You can read about it in this post.

Note the wood-burning stove in this photo. The game room also had baseboard electric heaters to take off the chill.

Rich and John made bar stools - old milk cans with tractor seats welded on the top. I can't find a photo of them anywhere.

Pepper was the sweetest dog and had quite a personality. He was very attached to Mom and wherever she was, Pepper was not far away. He was part sheep dog and had a long coat that matted. The summer of 1987 was a hot one, and Pepper was uncomfortable. Mom and I took Pepper into Riverton for a hair cut. He was embarrassed for days, and the cows did not recognize him and chased him out of the corral, but gradually, he stopped moping and was much happier in the summer heat.

  1. That was pretty fancy for back in the day. Sweet memories.

  2. That was quite a game room. I'll bet a lot of fun times were had there. Loved the story about the dog. It's so funny how shearing them makes them act embarrassed. Our long haired cat was sheared this summer and he acted (and looked) like he'd been caught sporting his wrinkly long johns out in public.

  4. That's a mighty fine game room; it has so much character! Must have been fun to hang out there and play some games of pool. I like the story about your Mom and Pepper too.

  5. What a great post! I love the chicken house game room. It's like the local bar where everybody knows your name. Pepper was a cutie and looks like a good mascot.

  6. Nancy I see a resemblence with Rosa! Pepper looks like Troy's dog Pepper! Seriously! I love the game room and the stories it could tell!

  7. What fun! My grandmother had a Pepper too, but he was a small terrier. The game room reminds me of the pool table in the old firehouse, upstairs. The old firehouse is now owned by a blacksmith, and even the pool table that replaced the old one in the new station is gone now.

  8. What fun to look back at old photos and remember the good times. I enjoyed hearing about Pepper too...poor thing in the heat black dogs really suffer. I have threatened to shave Chance too:)
