Back in Time - Snowman Family

Snowman Family
December 1968

I remember helping my mother and brother make these snowman figures. The colored images were ordered from a catalog and then glued on plywood. A clear coat of varnish was the final preparation.

The snowman was about five foot tall and was held in place with a steel fence post. A lantern hung from his left arm, but the wind always blew it off. My mother displayed these figures for nearly 20 years. She also had a Santa that stood about 6 foot tall, prepared the same way.

Eventually the eaves of the house were outlined with Christmas lights. In the late 60s, the farmhouse was one of only a handful in the area that had an outdoor display.

I displayed the Snowman family at my house in the 80s

  1. Have never seen those....How wonderful that you made them:)

  2. Wow! They have lasted a long, long time. Obviously, you made them very well.

  3. Love these snowmen and I'm sure the memory of making them is the best part whenever your family pulled them out for a new season.

  4. I've never seen those either and I'm amazed they lasted that long. How neat that it was something that could be ordered in that way, probably much cheaper than anything that was ready made, and not too hard to make if you have the tools. Love it.

  5. Ahh, brings back good holiday memories from when I was a kid.

  6. I LOVE the snowman family!!! How wonderful that you actually MADE them

  7. Nostalgia! They have plastic cousins around these parts. I can't remember anyone in particular having them, but I remember them just the same.

  8. Very nice, i expect to hear Burl Ives' voice coming from the snowman. What a fun ritual it muse have been to get them out every year.

I love comments!
