Brain Freeze - Camping Style

My family gathered for a week-long reunion in the Wind River mountains in August 1999. Nearly everyone was able to attend, and we had a great time camping: most in tents, some in a motor home (shown in the photo).

Anyone who has "roughed it" knows that after a few days of no showers just having clean hair is refreshing.

The campground did not have running water in the bathrooms, but the camping site we had was near the water pump. These photos show how pump had to be turned with two hands. The water coming out of that pump was ice cold, even in August.

My niece, sister, and I took turns at the pump as we each shampooed our hair in the icy water.

It's not an experience that I want to repeat anytime soon - talk about a "brain freeze," my teeth are chattering just thinking about it.

  2. That was a chilling experience, I'm sure, but you seem to have happy memories of it. We used to camp a lot and I loved it!

  3. Oh lawsy! I'm sitting in 90 degree weather and I just got a CHILL! LOL

But, I bet your hair looked nice and shiny. They say your final rinse should be with cold water. ;-)

  4. I can only imagine the pain but you can only go for so long without washing at least your hair! I think I might have tried to warm that water on a camp fire. When I was young we would camp in the San Diego mountains. There was running water in the bathrooms and I can still remember the cold water. My mother used to say, "Go take a duck bath," as in duck in and duck out fast before you freeze.

  7. Sounds like a cool family vacation. Ha! It's true though, nothing like a clean head of hair after a few days of roughing it!

  8. Bet everyone had a good time. I did a lot of this type of camping as a Girl Scout, but as an adult it just wasn't a fun experience. Guess I'm too much of a wimpy city girl anymore.

  10. Great pictures of you girls roughing it! Ha. I know that feeling of washing in ice cold water. It's a bit painful...but worth it. At least after you warm up again!!

  11. That's why I don't camp anymore. I am too fond of climate control and indoor plumbing.

  12. Did that once, talk about a major headache from the cold water. Next time I heated the water, from then on we only camped where we had showers and now I'm happy to say we don't camp. My days of putting on my boots and walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night, crawling back into the tent....done and DONE!
