Assembly Sewing

cloth ties
April 2020
Like many other quilters around the world, my sewing room has turned into a factory.

I've been making masks for friends, family, and members of my church. So far, I have produced over 50 masks.

My community has four confirmed cases of COVID-19. The local hospital has been receiving medical-grade mask donations from businesses and the University of Wyoming, so I decided to donate masks to community members.

I anticipate once the pandemic rate has leveled off and the Stay at Home orders are lifted, individuals will be asked to wear masks in public for a period of time.

  1. How generous of you! I am sure they will be much appreciated. Before all this started I was buying cloth ones to use when I make soap because they are much more comfortable not to mention much cuter.

  2. Oh, how wonderful! I can't wait until I am strong enough to sit and sew some also!

  3. Kudos to you for making masks! I wish that I sewed. I'd be doing the same thing. I don't think that they want knitted masks!

  4. Bless your heart for making so many for donation. I think you're right about people wearing masks in public once the quarantines are lifted. Some may just choose to wear them until they feel safe. We still have only the 3 original cases, but Sioux Falls has had their cases explode in numbers due to the pork processing plant. And there is one case in the small town we used to live in - and it is the boyfriend of one of my nieces. He self-isolated, but it may not have been soon enough. Scary times!

  5. That certainly should reduce your "scrap" pile of fabric and for a good cause too.

  6. Well done. Mom's been making headbands for the nurses/doctors so the elastic doesn't rub their ears raw. She's raided my elastic and button stash twice now!

  10. I've made seven masks for friends before my back gave out and I ran out of elastic. No sewing for me until they get my back fixed. I gave them all away and didn't have any for myself! Imagine my surprise when I received a beautiful mask in the mail from Connie H. (Far Side). What a blessing! Go was watching out for me for sure. I didn't even think to make one for me. HA!
Take care and thank you for all of your hard work.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  11. Good on you, what a great thing to be doing. Am I right in presuming that the local hospitals dont have, or are not receiving their own supply of medical masks, and that is why the business donations are required?

  12. You are impressive with your output. I haven’t been serious about counting but I think I’ll go back and see if I can remember. Once my family was covered I’m on a team making masks for our neighbors. I’m using ties like you are doing. I have been lucky to have been given several quilter's estates stashes. So now I’m using white fabric and muslin for the lining and ties from those. Unfortunately even with a tape maker it takes a long time to make those ties. Although I have to say I like your colored ties a lot. I may start doing that. I’m very happy to use up some of my fabric.
