Keeping It Real

quilting projects on the "design floor"
August 2019
This photo tells the real story behind my crafting: I tend to create a mess in more than one room when sewing. I often pull various fabrics from my stash to audition border options, so it's common to see piles of fabric in crumpled heaps or in piles.

Friday afternoon, I found eight, white/blue half-square triangles (HSTs) in a bin of odds and ends and turned them into star points for a couple of square, eagle panels. The striped fabric in the center of this mess was also in the scrap bin and will be used for a quick border.

I worked on these two Quilts of Valor (QOV) on Friday and Saturday for the Riverton QOV group. They plan to award nearly 250 QOV to veterans for Veteran's Day. Hopefully, I'll be able to make a few more quilts for the ceremony.

  1. It looks like home to me! I love the idea of the HST's turning that panel into a star--I will use that for the panels I have left!
Creative people need room to create!

  3. Same here. Quilting is a multi room endeavor.

  6. Agreed - not really a mess, just creativity. I have the same habits of leaving multiple projects laying around. We use the space we have.

  7. Good use of the HST. You just can't beat the beauty of a star block. I'm amazed at hearing about 250 quilts to be presented. Our group is hoping to have 6 ready to present by Veteran's Day. We have 4 done (except for labels) and 2 are at the long arm quilters.

  8. I agree about mess vs creativity. And...I'm thrilled to hear about all of the quilts to be presented. And here I thought my 100 mini-stockings was a lot! :-) I love hearing about how people honor our Veteran's. I think it's so important to remember how they sacrificed for us and our freedoms and honor them for that.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  9. You made me laugh. I'm fairly decent with putting away big pieces of fabric (half yard or so...) It's the little bits and pieces I make into swiss cheese that still has some decent space left that does me in. Those scraps pile up on the cutting table until I can't stand it anymore and then I try to decide keep or throw. If keep where? It is sometimes like an archeologic dig with leftovers from quilts made months ago still hanging around.

  12. Nothing wrong with a little mess while being creative. In fact, it's not really mess at all, is it? Just blocks and fabrics seeing how they all meld together.

  13. If Dave wasn't here, my sewing would probably gravitate more around the house. But for now I keep it to the sewing room, sometimes the hall outside, and occasionally on the bed (though it has to be cleaned up by bed time!)
