Do You Kitchener?

grafting live stitches with the kitchener stitch

I'll admit grafting stitches on my hand-knit socks was intimidating at first, but now the technique is so familiar I can do it easily as well as quickly.

What is your favorite method of grafting?

  1. I like the smooth feel of the Kitchener stitch. But I always have to look up the directions to make sure I do it correctly. Since I don’t make socks all that often a refresher is needed. Where else do you use the Kitchener stitch?

  3. Like Dee, I enjoy doing the Kitchener stitch. And, I like the way it looks and feels. I knit socks frequently enough that I don't have a problem remembering how to do it.

  4. I use the Kitchener but have to have the directions in front of me as still not real comfortable with it but do like the finish.

  5. I use the Kitchener stitch. On rare occasions, I'll turn the sock inside out and do a three-needle bindoff, but most of the time I'm too lazy to do that extra step.

  6. I do kitchener. I've done it so much now I don't really need to think about it.

  8. I use it on my Almost Lost dishcloth but not on my socks. I am terrible at it. I get lost all the time so it never is smooth which is not good for sock toes. I just decrease down to eight and pull it through. I've never had a problem with the toes opening so it works for me.

  9. I do kitchener all of the time and like you, I make enough socks that it stays familiar with no directions needed. I like the smooth feeling and visually you can't even tell where the join is.

  10. I love the Kitchener stitch - except on that last stitch. What do you do? Also, how do you weave in the end so you don't have that piece of yarn bothering your foot?

  12. I don't mind doing Kitchener at all! It has a nice rhythm; knit off, purl, purl off, knit!

  13. I'd love some suggestions for that last stitch, too. I carry the directions with me in my knitting bag...just in case!
