orphan star block
May 2019 |
The baggie of orphan star blocks and fabric that I brought home from Prayers & Squares contained five star blocks sewn together with sashing. It almost looked like the quilter wanted to make a table runner. Another completed star (shown above) was also in the bag, but it had a mitered frame. Do you see a problem with that block? Look at the middle section of the bottom row - do you see that it is upside down? A seam ripper and a bit of stitching quickly transformed the block.
Pieces of another star were also in the baggie, but the star was smaller than the other six. Thankfully, the baggie contained some extra strips of the pink paisley fabric, so I framed the smaller star to make it the same size as the other blocks. I sashed the two loose stars and used the extra fabric to create some four-patches and an outside border.

Orphan Star Quilt #2
52 x 76 inches |
The local Prayers & Squares group makes baby - lap size quilts. Since the group uses 60" fleece on the back, they do not want the width to be larger than 58 inches, so this orphan quilt's measurement falls within the requirements.
It is fun to play with odd bits to see what I can create with them.
Very nice! The *smaller* star piece looks great and I really like the addition of blue to this one.
ReplyDeleteIt was strange that the bottom of that star was upside down...A Unusual design but it came out good.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you put those stars around the squares on two sides. It turned out great.
ReplyDeleteWow--very nice transformation! You've got a knack for this!
ReplyDeleteThat is amazing. I'm always impressed by what you can do with scraps and bits and pieces. You always come up with a beautiful quilt. This group is lucky that you became a part of it.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
That's so pretty! How clever to combine two patterns in one quilt.
ReplyDeleteNeat!
ReplyDeleteWell done!
