Baking from Scratch

mini loaves of banana bread
April 2019
When I found some half-priced bananas in the grocery store over the weekend, I developed a craving for homemade banana bread. It's been ages since I've baked anything from scratch, but I knew I had the necessary ingredients in my pantry.

I made two full-sized loaves and three mini loaves. The small loaves are gifts, and the two large loaves are sliced, wrapped, and tucked in the freezer (minus a couple of slices 😉) for future breakfast treats.

What item(s) have you recently baked without using a mix?

  4. And I'm betting your home smelled amazing while those pretty loaves were baking! Your pans are pretty too! :) Back when the kids were small and we lived in Texas, there was a tiny, independently owned grocery/convenience store. It was called Balmorhea Grocery, but we all just called it Harry's. When we popped in there and he had overripe bananas, he would always insist I take them for free because he knew I baked. I would always take him a loaf or muffins. Such a sweet man.

  5. Nothing - I bake nothing from scratch. I used to bake banana bread from scratch quite often, but Chiquita makes a great mix. Just add the eggs and bananas. Actually I rarely bake anything outside of the holidays, except for the occasional banana bread.

  6. My brother and I grew up at the elbow of a Baker (literally, as that's Mom's maiden name). I won't say I bake like crazy, but when I do it's almost always from scratch.(Cakes and muffins I usually use a mix just because I'm lazy). Last week I made us an apple crisp, and earlier this week I made myself some chocolate chip cookies. But now you've got me thinking about baking.... I think maybe Dave needs some peanut butter ones.

  7. Banana bread. I bake it quite often because it's a popular treat for our Thursday evening Bible study. I purposely by banana's when they are on "the edge" just so I can make bread. Your's looks delicious. Why did I not think about pre-slicing? I always have to pull an entire loaf out of the freezer. I will be using your trick from now on.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  10. I've never used a mix so don't know anything about them. Not sure its such a big thing here. I do bake regularly and quite enjoy making things the old fashioned way. Have to admit that I'm rather a messy cook so always wear an apron!
