A Place for Everything . . .

reorganized knitting supply area
January 2018
I've been cleaning, decluttering, and downsizing for about three weeks, and gradually I'm making progress.

Unfortunately, I didn't take a "before" photo of this area, but it was a mess. The bottom shelf housed a lot of vinyl records; the middle shelf, a record player. I don't know about you, but I haven't played a record in years. It was time to let go of those items and allow them to find new homes.

Once the unit was bare, I moved the shelves to accommodate the fabric cubbies. The cubbies contain various types of yarn - not all of my yarn stash, but a good share of it. The yarn is contained, can easily be accessed, and is protected from sunlight and dust.

See that shelf of notebooks? They contain various knitting patterns. I was ruthless in cleaning the notebooks, too. Patterns that I knew would never be knit were pulled and tossed in the recycle bin.

The top shelf is the home for all of my knitting needles, crochet hooks, and sock blockers. The center shelf contains cotton yarn for dishcloths and cards for making pattern flip books.

The hurricane lamps on top of the shelves are used when the electricity goes out. They have come in handy several times in recent years.

Having a specific place to store these items makes me happy.

Are your crafting supplies all in one area?

  1. That is inspiring! My organizing has been in my closet and like you I am making progress that is exciting to me. I think the quote "less is more" just might be the key.

  2. That looks so nice Nancy! And, I love the hurricane lamps.

My knitting "stuff" is all in the office room, but it is quickly spilling out of the confines of a chest, bookshelves, etc. I definitely need to do some culling - particularly in the binder region - I have printed out way too many patterns, most of which I will never use.

  3. Good for you! I need to do this in my whole house. I'm sitting at my desk this morning and looking at the clutter is driving me crazy. Some is mine and some is my husband's stuff - like the drone currently sitting on top of the file cabinet. We've worked on decluttering our basement this fall but need to keep going. And I'm admitting my sewing room is the worst.

  4. Nothing feels better than getting organized! I am getting ready to do my twice-yearly organizing in my sewing/knitting area, but a few boxes related to the holidays have to be put away first.

  5. Your post this morning is spurring me into action! I aspire to have all of my sewing in one space this year. Each time the kids come home, I send something of their's back with them. I still have the need for extra bedrooms on a regular basis so my stitching goes on around the available space. I know where everything is, it's just in numerous spots. :)
I'm sure it feels wonderful to have everything in it's place. I'll be working on that this morning.

  6. Good job Nancy. Yum No. I try to keep it all contained, but throughout the year it moves a bit. Currently I have a project in the front closet, several skeins and leftover bags in a cabinet in the living room, most of my stash in a dresser in the family room and my needles in a closet . WHAT? I think I should spend a day organizing.....I kind of want to now

  7. My supplies aren't all in one area, but they ARE all organized within their areas. I like tidy!! LOL Your shelves looks perfect! It's nice when you know WHERE to look for what you want.

I de-cluttered a LOT of stuff when we left Jacksonville. When you are paying by the pound for stuff to be carted to your new house, you get pretty determined to clean out.

We must have done okay .... our shipment was just over 3,000 lbs. A 2 bedroom apt. is estimated at 7,000 lbs.

  8. Nice job of organizing. Every time we move things get pared down to a degree. Pat has us in very good shape except my studio which holds the knitting, quilting and stamping stuff. I've been donating rubber stamp sets to church auctions but I haven't gotten rid of what needs to be. The quilting -- is organized but I have a lot of things. I hate to get rid of stuff because the minute I get rid of a particular piece of fabric I need it for something. But I did talk to my buddies about how to control magazines and patterns. Not sure if I will follow through but it's time to move out some of my many magazines -- from 10+ years ago....

  9. You are hired. That looks so nice.

I've finally found a place to keep my yarn...stashed in every nook and cranny of my home. :)

  10. It looks very organized. I brought back two bins of yarn from the GA condo to add to what was already here. I obvious have way too much yarn especially considering how slowly I knit!

  12. That is wonderful. I love how organized and neat it all looks. I need to go through all of my pattern books and be ruthless too. I need to be honest and admit that I’m never going to use a lot of those patterns. I love how you used the cubbies. Thank you for the inspiration.
    Blessings, Betsy

  14. Oh don't talk to me about vinyl!!! Dave's grandfather was a DJ in the early 80s and Dave inherited his record collection. I have a basement full of it and Dave won't let any of it go!!!!

Your organization looks wonderful. It makes me quite jealous. I have a whole (small) room for my crafting supplies, but it's not nice and try like yours!
