Seasons Come and Seasons Go

Late afternoon
This is the second snow storm to hit this area in as many weeks. If these two storms are any indication of what's ahead, it could be a looooong Winter. The first storm dropped about 5 inches, and last week's storm about 8 inches of snow and even more moisture fell on Thursday in the form of rain. Each drop and flake makes a tiny dent in the drought that has plagued Wyoming the last decade.

The green tomatoes were purchased Wednesday at the area's final Farmer's Market. They will eventually turn red and be my last taste of local produce for another year. Throughout the growing season, I purchased fresh lettuce, radishes, tomatoes, green beans, turnips, kohlrabi, cabbage, squash, raspberries, jam, kettle corn, and baked goods - all from local producers. What item(s) do you typically purchase at a Farmer's Market?

Seasons Come and Season Go
Amazing how quickly 8 inches of snow melts when the sun shines!

Seasons come and seasons go, and in Wyoming they are sometimes skipped altogether.

  1. Oh no not yet! I had heard that some areas were getting hit with snow, I wasn't sure where you lived.

  2. I don't get to go to the farmer's market very often. We don't have that many around here. But, when I do, it's for the Plant City strawberries and beets and other veggies IF they are organic. Other than that, the stuff at the farmer's market is basically the same as what is at the supermarket.

Sadly, Florida is WAY BEHIND on the local eating trend (although it is starting to get better). We have a *local foods shopping center* opening at the end of October.

  3. Those two pictures show so well the contrast seen in the matter of hours. Except for a little snow hiding on the north side of buildings...and sagebrush, my snow is gone too. My grass never looked better. Ha. I love having the farmers' markets. Last week I bought some fresh bread and kettlecorn...yum.

  5. Read all about the snow!!! Wondered how it affected you! I remember that heave wet fall snows were a pain for a bit, but made our springs so much better!!!

I usually grow as much as I can myself, but with the drought that has been a problem. We have deer hunters who have a 60 acre truck farm in East Texas and they have been so generous - tomatoes, zucchini, summer squash, onions, cucumbers, okra! Yum yum!!! I buy cantaloupe and watermelon for local fruit stands. I do love fresh produce!!

    Have a great day!

  7. Oh, I love seasonal produce, but I tend to come home with the specialty items like seasoned goat cheeses, baked goods, jewelry... (hem)...

Sorry you didn't get fall. I'm not sure we are either. We had a few days, reverted back to summer, and now summer is leaving with the last bands of a tropical storm, sure to blow and wash the poor leaves from the trees.

  8. I always come away from the Farmers' Market with an arm load of kale for juicing and cooking. I stock up on cheeses too. I love the picture of the tomatoes in the window against the snowy backdrop! Beautiful!!

  9. We are finally getting fall around here. Wish I could take off time from work to go to the Farmer's Market, but it won't happen. I believe tomorrow is the last day for it this season. :(

  10. I get local honey at the farmers market. Wow, snow in October. I can't imagine that.

  11. Oh I am so sorry. At least it warmed up for you!!

  12. I hate it when you go from summer straight to winter. My grandpa who lived in Montana always said if you don't like the weather - wait 5 minutes and it will change. Sounds like Wyoming is behaving that way this year.

Farmer's Market - fruit, apples, peaches, plums, apricots and berries of all sorts. Cheese, hummus, fresh pasta, salad mix, kale, sometimes crepes! g

  13. Oh dear, another snow storm! It makes the warm weather in between them even more precious. Hope you were able to get out and enjoy that pretty sunshine in the second photo.

Two things that always taste better straight from the farm are tomatoes and eggs. Store bought is never as good.

  14. We were thrilled with our own garden that provided abundant beans, tomatoes, lettuce, tomatoes, zucchini and tomatoes. Did you figure out we were covered in tomatoes? I made home made soup and spaghetti sauce with some of our tomatoes. We tend to buy jams and jellies at the farmers market.

  15. That was a fast melt! I collected our green tomatoes yesterday and I wrap them in newspaper individually and put them in an ice cream bucket under the stairs which is the coolest spot in the house. They will gradually ripen:)
