Summer Reading

Currently, I am reading four books (three shown here and the other on my Kindle), and I have more in my queue. Summer and reading go so well together: nothing (other than knitting) beats sitting on the deck with a cold drink, a light snack, and a good book.

The Highway is a new release by one of my favorite authors, who lives and writes in Wyoming. I just started this and got sidetracked by Plainsong, but it appears to follow a demented big-rig driver on a crime spree across Montana.

Plainsong - loaned to me by Nancy Kay, a good friend and knitting buddy. A unique story with each chapter focusing on one/two characters. As the story progresses, the characters' lives begin to overlap.

Rightful Place - recommended by Ranch Wife. This is a collection of essays about the author's connection with the land and finding her "rightful place."

These authors have completely different writing styles, but each book is entertaining.

Do you like to in the summer? Any recommendations?

  1. Ha Ha! I just wrote my blog post for the day about the two books that I completely frittered away the past couple days reading. I also listened to audiobooks while I quilt. I'm going to add your suggestions to my list as I am always looking for a good book. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I always have a book in progress. Usually I read in bed right before going to sleep, but sometimes I treat myself to an afternoon of reading on the porch...not in the summer though, because it's just too hot here.

  3. Good reads! I started a C.J.Box novel and didn't finish it, so I'm vowing to grab that one again and read it through. Have you met the two farmer brothers in Plainsong?

  4. The books all sound great. I will have to take a look at them. I wish the weather would change and allow me to read on the patio with a cool drink. It is too hot here to do that even with the misters spraying cool water, but that sounds like a perfect way to spend summer days.

  7. Sounds like interesting books. I'm loving my nook because I can read and knit at the same time. It's hard to knit when you are holding a book. Kinda reminds me of the old joke, next to a dog a book is man's best friend, inside it's too dark to read.

Okay - this summer I've read: Silver Linings Playbook - interesting. Wish I'd read the book before I saw the movie. The Art of Racing in the Rain - loved it! The beginning was a bit hard due to the still fresh loss of Lucy, but I adored this book. And I just finished a book called Breathe - I enjoyed it. It was a collaboration and I'd read something else these girls wrote. g

  10. I've always read more in the summer than in the winter. But now that I'm retired I will read much more than before, summer and winter alike.
I read Plainsong many years ago and loved it a lot. And recently I discovered C.J. Box because his novels are set in Wyoming. I've just finished the first of the Joe Pickett series. A great start.

  11. C J Box is one of my favorites. I found a new favorite this summer, Charles Martin.

  12. Half Broke Horses by Jeanette Walls - another Wyoming author. I've also read Glass Castle and Let's Not Go to the Dogs Tonight by the same author. All a good read but start with Half-Broke Horses.
