Nancy (me) and Steve Barnes
Halloween Costume Party
rural ranch school near Wheatland, WY
circa 1975 or 1976 |
Zelda, who taught at an isolated school, hosted a costume party and invited teachers and some friends from Wheatland and other
ranch schools in Platte, Albany, and Converse Counties. Zelda's party was held at the ranch house, and fearing we would not be able to find our way out in the dark, we took bedrolls to spend the night.
As you can see, I borrowed
another cheerleader uniform from the school closet. I made the costume that Steve is wearing the year before when my students performed
The Velveteen Rabbit. The "fabric" was an old stage curtain. Over the years, my students and I made several costumes from the massive pile of maroon and blue velvet.

The party was pretty mellow until four or five cowboys from a neighboring ranch thundered over a hill, riding their horses, as well as whooping and hollering. It was difficult to determine who they were because they wore masks (one of them is barely visible in the photo above). Please note that he also has a gun in his right hand. Everyone was a little uneasy until the interlopers removed their masks.
Have you attended a memorable costume party?
What fun!! No stores...except...when Iwas 11 years old...I had know one to go Halloweening with...now I was always big for my age...so even though I was 11 people would take me for a lot older...Well my married sister so lived in our basement suite was home...she is 14 years older than me...plus she was shorter than me...she dressed up and went out with me!!! What fun... I did all the talking...was bigger than her...we did get some comments ...Aren't you to old to be out???...but remember I was only 11!
ReplyDeleteNope. I'm lame and haven't been to but one adult costume party. The Knight was a hobo and I can't recall what I wore...
ReplyDeleteSounds scary to me. Was it a real gun?
ReplyDeleteWhat a picture!!! What a night and here I always thought you were that quiet little teacher:)

ReplyDeleteHOw funny. We hosted a memorable one once...
ReplyDeleteour friend Ray came dressed as a huge outhouse. He was was wearing shorts under the outhouse but his bare legs showing made it look otherwise. He had a big rollof toilet paper hanging on the outside of the outhouse....
it was so funny
Woah, I definitely have not been to a costume party as interesting as that one! The rabbit costume is great!
ReplyDeleteTalk about wild parties... nope, can't remember ever going to a wild Halloween party. Although I do own a clown costume and wig that I used to wear at school some years. But, ugh, the make up is so hard to get off. This year we only wore hats and I fixed up my black one with pink boa feathers.
