Failure to Communicate

August 2020

About five years ago, I purchased a quilt kit - pattern, fabric for the blocks, border, binding, and backing. I rarely purchase kits, but it was a good deal, and I liked the pattern.

Fast forward to 2020 . . . it was time to cut the fabric and begin the quilt. I followed the cutting directions for the blocks (I don't cut borders until the blocks are finished) and began sewing one of the blocks.

Hmmm, something was definitely wrong. I checked the pattern again and again. Had I cut the wrong pieces (the pattern had directions for two different sizes - a table topper and a quilt)? No, the pieces were cut and sewn correctly, but the pinwheels were MUCH larger than the other block pieces.

Not much I could do at this point - no extra fabric because it was a kit - other than cut the pinwheels to the correct size.

What a waste of fabric!

* I checked for an errata, and none seems to be available.

  1. Frustrating situation. Good thing you have the experience to make lemonade.

  2. I was thinking the same as the others - you had the experience to make it work. It's a lovely design so far.

  3. How frustrating! Sorry about that, but were glad you were able to "fix" it. But...will it be a good size when you are finished?

  4. I have tons of quilt kits stacked up downstairs still in their boxes and that's my fear. If there is an issue there won't be any help with discontinued kits. I have already started cannibalizing some of the kits just so they won't go to waste. I am such a sucker for buying kits-not so much when it comes to using them.

  5. Too bad! Use the cuts to make a border! After you slam a cupboard door! lol

  6. I'm pretty sure the mistake isn't yours. Your quilting is so precise.

  9. That's upsetting. As least you were able to come up with a work around!

  10. At least you had the know-how to fix it. Unlike me who would have been clueless. It must have been frustrating for you though.

  11. How frustrating. The small blocks are cute but sad that the cutting instructions were off.

  12. How absolutely frustrating. However, your cut blocks look perfect all together.

  13. How discouraging. I do like the colors they are Fall like:)

  14. I don’t buy very many kits. And generally when I do it is because the yardage is much cheaper than the going rate. Hopefully you will have enough fabric to make the smaller blocks. I’ve heard of a few friends have problems with kits. Not always much you can do about either. Sigh.
