Doll Blanket

Sunbonnet Sue
April 2017
Sunbonnet Sue is one of my favorite vintage blocks, so when I saw the small panel in the fabric bin with the scraps I rescued at the thrift shop, I didn't hesitate to bring her home with me.

I added backing, batting and some simple quilting. A quick search in my bias tape bin revealed just enough wide bias tape for the binding. This little quilt will be gifted to a little girl whose doll needs a blanket.

My sisters and I each made a Sunbonnet Sue quilt from blocks our Mom made. The Half Moon Lake Retreat was a special time for all of us.

  5. Just darling! That's a great rescue! My sister-in-law made a beautiful pink Sun Bonnet Sue quilt for my oldest daughter when she was born. I just found it again, and think my granddaughter will love having her mommy's quilt. Plus it's pink!

  9. Sunbonnet Sue - tried and true. Just read your blog about mother's blocks. What beautiful work she did. I am so pleased you and your sisters caught the love of sewing and continue to this day. Your doll blanket is delightful and I feel sure it will gladden a young girl's heart to own this.

  11. That looks like the panel that the gals at Little Quilts designed. It will be wonderful for a little girl's doll. Truth told -- I'm not a fan of Sues.

  13. I love that block too and your find made a wonderful doll quilt that will be treasured by the little girl that receives it! I love the memories it evoked of your mother and your retreat with your sisters.
My MIL made our daughter a Sunbonnet Sue quilt when she was 2. It's amazing with prairie points and buttons in each block. I keep it in the cedar chest and our girl will get it when she has a place of her own.
We've had many Miller moth experiences here as well. Some years they are worse than others and I have sucked them up with my vacuum cleaner, filling the canister on a daily basis in years past.
