Springtime in the Rockies

Togwotee Pass
Continental Divide
May 1979
Even though these photos are old, they capture a typical spring day in Wyoming. The weather can range from snow flurries placing a new blanket over the terrain to delicate new leaves unfurling on the aspen trees.

These photos in this post were taken on the same day - one on the pass and one in the valley.

Photos of Togwotee Pass in 2011 can be seen here and here.

Here's the weather report this morning:

I hope the "moderate snow" stays in the mountains, and that the valley will receive a more liquid form of moisture. Welcome to Springtime in the Rockies!

  1. A forecast of snow this late in the season must be discouraging, even if it's typical for springtime in the Rockies.

We broke long standing low temperature records in our area on Saturday. Crazy weather!

  3. That sure wouldn't qualify as spring in the desert:) Think perhaps it teaches you patience.

  4. I'm not going to complain about all the rain we are getting. I totally love that cabin!

  5. Nice pics, and thanks for the weather report (we're still not sure of our route across the states, so this will be something to watch! lol) And isn't it funny, last night we googled and played "Tumblin Tumbleweeds" for our sons, who had never heard it! Too funny! (They have hardwood floors and dogs, and a hair 'tumbleweed' rolled by, and I started singing it. They looked at me like I had a third eye! lol

  7. Those two photos tell the true story of our Wyo weather in the spring!! I'm looking out the window at blowing snow...and I've got wood burning in the stove. Spring...really??? Yep. I put a little water and fertilizer on the grass yesterday when it was 50 degrees...and now this moisture ought to be good for the grass and trees. I suspect we'll start to really green up by the end of the week when temps will be back up near 50 degrees.
I had to listen to the Sons of the Pioneers...great song for this morning!

  8. The snow is so beautiful!! We were caught in a blizzard in the Rockies, early in May one spring. Had a great time being snowed in and just sitting by the fire. It's one of my favorite memories!

  9. We have had the strangest weather this spring. It was HOT in January and in April ... it's been COLD!

  11. Yikes. I'm complaining it is only high 50's here after having a week of weather in the 70's and 80's. I've been freezing all day of course, it helps to turn the heat up but once the ac is on who wants to turn on the heat? ME! Great pictures.
