Say What?

My eye is often drawn to the unusual and obscure, and when I spotted this manhole cover in front of a sandwich shop on the way to Reno, I snapped a quick photo. All of the manhole covers in my town are stamped "Sewer."

Clearly, the term "Sanitary Sewer" is an oxymoron, but what is the intended meaning? Curious readers can find out here.

What's stamped on the manhole covers in your town?

  1. I had to laugh at your question... manhole covers? None out here in the boonies. Septic tanks rule here. I love finding unusual signs. Once on a trip to Galveston, TX we found a sign that said, "Fresh dead shrimp." Sounds yummy doesn't it? It was on a bait shop. On that same trip we spotted, "Frank's, best place in TX to take a leak!" It was Frank's Tire Shop. Have a great weekend!

  3. Oh my gosh! Thank you! I'm not the only one in the world looking down at manhole covers!!!!

In Winter Park they have a beautiful stylized peacock and the name of the town.

My favorites were the ones in New Orleans. They had a moon and stars and were beautiful.

Here in Orlando, I think it just says Orange County Utilities. :0( Not very fancy at all. Maybe they could put some Mickey Mouse ears on the O.

  8. I was surprised when I realized that I don't know what is stamped on our manhole covers. I've never looked at them--just walk right on over them! I think it is part of my "never reading signs" thing. It will surely get me into a world of trouble one day. Heehee!
