Bits and Pieces

orphan pinwheels
July 2021

I spent Saturday adding labels and binding to two Quilts of Valor that arrived from Kathy B. in CO on Thursday. They are now washed and ready to send to Idaho for awarding.

As I tidied the sewing room, I decided to work with some orphans that have been hanging around in bins too long. I found a pile of pinwheels and hourglass blocks and made plans to sew them together into a more useful size. These larger blocks may eventually become pillows, table toppers, or doll quilts.

Before I start any new projects or cut into any new fabric, I need to use the bits and pieces remaining from previous projects.

  1. They will become something cute and useful. The orphan pinwheels and hourglass units at my house are collecting in a big ziplock bag hanging on my bulletin board - waiting to become something.

  3. How lovely! I admire your organizational skills. I always have a mess with my leftovers. You should see my new leftover mask material bin. I was just thinking I should make a pandemic souvenir quilt out of it but I don't think we are out of the woods yet and I'm pretty sure I won't EVER want to remember what we've been through in the past year and half.

  5. That's a good idea. However.....my leftovers usually just get left behind somewhere or other.

  7. It can be hard to make all of the orphans work together but if anyone can do it, it's you!
    I like the beginning!

  10. You put me to shame! I admire you cleaning up and using your leftover scraps before you start something new. On the other hand I tend to let scraps and left overs pile up on my cutting table getting shoved aside as I need room. I know I do this as I can remember years ago cleaning up my sewing space and finding remnants from multiple finished projects. Sigh. I need to put some stuff away even as I type! Have a good week.

  11. I went to the County Fair today and saw several beautiful Quilts of Valor. Talent abounds in this county. I would love to enter some knitted items but I don't want dirty, sticky fingers all over my hours and hours of knitting labor.
