vintage valentine |
Remember the days when valentines were full of puns? Valentines currently on store shelves seem to feature super heroes and princesses rather than silly puns. I think the silly sayings are the most memorable.
A favorite valentine I received in elementary school was handmade from red and white construction paper and looked like the gift tag in the photo below - a woven Scandinavian heart.

Did you ever make valentines to give to your friends? Did you keep any valentines from your childhood?
No to both questions but the old ones were definitely better.
ReplyDeleteI used to love Valentine's Day when I was teaching. Instead of a party we always had an art event where I brought in lots of stuff for them to make Valentines to take home to family members. The kids always came up with the most amazing cards. Things I would have never thought of.
ReplyDeleteI agree the old ones were better. I have a harder and harder time each year finding a card for Fletch. I have not saved any and I don't make any either.
ReplyDeleteNo I don't have any from my childhood but I received a sweet one this week from a blogging sister. It looks just like the older vintage ones and I love it. Dennis and I don't even exchange cards anymore. Neither of us are fond of the ones in the stores.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
I don't have any Valentine's anymore. But in Grade 3, my crush gave me a Valentine that said he liked me. I taped it to my headboard on my bed and it stayed there until Grade 7 when I moved to a different city. Funny thing... my best friend knows his family, and while he moved away across the country to BC, she found out he married a girl named Valerie. What are the odds!?!
ReplyDeleteI kept some of my daughters Valentines and I may have one in my scrapbook from the grandsons. Yes the old valentines were the best!
ReplyDeleteI had that same "Do-Nut" valentine. Also, we made the red & white woven hearts. Loved those. :) My favorite thing to do was to make our Valentine box. We decorated oatmeal boxes, cereal boxes, and the best = shoe boxes to look like a mailbox for our Valentines.
ReplyDeleteI remember these "old" Valentines and smile each time I see one. Oh, the Valentine boxes that contained our Valentines were fun to make. I have only the memories, not the Valentines.
ReplyDeleteNo, i don't have any old valentines--my mom was not a keeper, so they were promptly tossed! i do remember the 'pun' ones! But I did make lots of them, even the woven heart you show here!
ReplyDeleteYes, I do remember those old valentines! I never did save any of those, though. I don't remember ever getting any that were handmade when I was little, but I did get handmade from my boys when they were in elementary school -- and those I saved and still have! -- including the ones they've done as adults! Happy Valentine's Day, Nancy! Hugs and blessings to you! ♥
ReplyDeleteI don't keep things long! But I remember getting a black valentine heart and feeling crushed. My neighbor Nicki C. had sent it with my other classmates valentines. I was recuperating at home from eye surgery. I still could cry and I did . Awwww. Nothing bad since!
ReplyDeleteI probably did as a kid. But as an adult I sometimes get in to card making mood and will use rubber stamps and ink to make cards. This year no one got cards. I forgot about V- day. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI do remember making those hearts; I think with a Girl Scout troop. Thanks for the reminder! I hope you've had a great day and that my Happy Valentine's wish for you isn't too late!
