Currently, the United States has 147 national cemeteries. The US Department of Veterans Affairs website has a cemetery locator and a grave locator available.

America's fallen have also been buried abroad: a list of those sites can be found on the American Battle Monuments Commission website.

  1. I live near a rather unusual cemetery full of soldiers. A few blocks away there is a cemetery for Confederate soldiers who died at Camp Randall, which is now the huge stadium for the University of Wisconsin Badger football team. When my son was little, he loved to walk over there and talk about the Civil War.

  3. Thank you for the photo and for the information. Here I'm trying to gently remind those around us of the reason we have this holiday. It seems to many it's just an extra day off of work and the beginning of summer. They seem to have forgotten The reason we remember this day.
    Blessings, Betsy

  4. There is a National Cemetery several hours away where my uncle is buried; I took my dad there to visit. Very powerful to be there in that place........

  6. I've visited the Arizona Memorial, the Punchbowl Natl Cemetery, Arlington Natl Cemetery, Black Hills Natl Cemetery, and Fort Snelling Natl Cemetery (where my grandparents are buried). Each has such a solemn and tranquil, but beautiful, feel to the places.

  7. Thanks for the info on the cemetery locator. I don't think any of my immediate relatives are in a national cemetery although my dad and both grand dads probably were eligible. We live fairly close to a Civil War cemetery that I hope to explore one day. We are planning to go to a talk in June at Chancellorsville which is also close. So far we've done no sight seeing here.

  8. I've visited Pearl Harbor and Arlington before, and had such a somber feeling at each place. Seeing so many names, and knowing that each one represents a person who sacrificed for our country, brings such a sense of indebtedness.
