Trimming and Squaring

trimming and squaring reclaimed batik
April 2017
I don't like to trim and square blocks, but it's a necessity for more precise sewing. I bagged the fabric "squares" I salvaged from the batik wrap-around skirt and took them to the sister's sewing retreat.

Tedious tasks are more enjoyable if I can chat while working. I now have a nice stack of 4 inch squares.

What tasks do you find tedious?

  1. I dislike all the trimming necessary when sewing garments. Those squares are so pretty! Glad your tedious task is complete!

  2. I find kitchen work tedious! It never stays done whereas once a block is trimmed, it stays trimmed! lol
Nice job on the blocks-'work' always gets done better with friends!

  3. Good Question! Tedious: dusting!!! tedious: weaving in ends!

  4. Laundry is tedious. LOL But in quilting, I find that making too many of the same block for a project becomes tedious. I almost always have to play with some other color or other block in the middle of things just to keep from being bored. The little red/white quilt was on the edge of being tedious because it was just 2 colors.

  5. I think the most tedious is the initial counting to start a cross stitch project. I'm always worried that I counted wrong so I do it three or four times.

  6. Ah, so that's how you get things to line up so well. I'm not sure I have the patience to be a traditional quilter.

  7. Yep, that sure is tedious. Back in my hand quilting days I used to hate marking my quilting lines. I would have happily paid someone to do it.

  8. What a great idea to reuse a batik skirt. The leftover bits look like confetti. I don't know if you would call it tedious but my brain turns upside down when I have to miter corners. That little wedge shaped ruler with the numbers and lines that can be turned six different ways--I think my math skills have atrophied.

  9. Can't wait to see what you do with these reclaimed squares! I have a tough time with binding quilts and knitting sock #2!

  10. You asked -- cutting 400+ 4.5" squares. Or sewing lots of small squares together. I like to do easy repetitive sewing with company. It goes so much faster. Enjoy your trimmed up blocks.

  11. Oh, I'm with you! The trimming and squaring up of endless blocks is my least favorite part of making a quilt, but alas, it must be done. Part of my problem is that I do not have a cutting surface that is a proper height for me. I'm getting too old to use the dining room table.
