Scrap-busting

preparing scraps for more blocks
2015
I'm focusing on using scraps before cutting into any "new" fabric The process is messy and time-consuming since the fabric has to be cut and trimmed. These stacks of scraps are destined to become granny squares.

  2. This reminds me that I'm way overdue for doing this again. I try to go into the scrap bin periodically to cut lots of workable pieces: 3.5 x 6.5" bricks, 2.5" squares, 3.5" squares, 1.5" squares. And I usually cut 5" charms too. I've used quite a few of the 2.5" squares this year in a couple of projects so those really need to be replenished.

  3. Perhaps your attention to detail is WHY you succeed so often with sewing!!

  4. So much detail work . . . so much patience! It certainly pays off in big ways!

  5. I was given 5 bags full of scraps. After sorting them into strings, bits, chunks & hunks, and yardage, I started trimming them down into usable pieces. I still have 3 bags left. These are the plastic bags that queen sized blankets come in.

  7. First -- I really like the little quilts on the walls. Very nice. I'm impressed at how organized you are. It's time for me to clean up and reorganize. Cutting scraps down is one of my least favorite parts of quilting. I'm trying to get at least one of the set of 9 patch blocks sewn together. We'll see.

  8. Nancy, Are you making a bigger granny square block than the last quilt you made? I can't wait to see your new scrappy blocks! Do you have a pattern you would like to share? Of course, you inspire me with your quilts and your organization of scraps so I will have to get back to my quilt room and get busy after the holidays.

    1. Hi Wendy! Thanks for leaving a comment. I'm making the blocks the same size as before because it works best with my scraps. I posted some tutorial links on this post: http://wyomingbreezes.blogspot.com/2015/06/scrap-patrol-granny-style.html

  9. I keep trying to use up all my scraps, and I do make progress, but then people give me bags of material -- more than scraps, but not quite fat quarter size -- and it begins all over again. Best wishes for successful scrap busting, Nancy. :)
