Sock Sizing

source
I found this image on Pinterest and thought it was a clever way to determine sock size. Obviously, the drawing is of the recipient's foot. The toe measurement (this shows 2 inches, but I allow for 2.5 inches) is drawn from the tip of the big toe.

I purchased a variety of sock blockers (sizes Small - Extra Large) from Loopy Ewe several years ago so I could easily knit socks for others, but this method may be more accurate, especially for those with wide feet.

  1. So simple but effective. My grandmother used to trace our hands when she made mittens for us grand-kids. There were 16 of us with all sizes of constantly growing hands, so that is how she made sure the mittens fit the right kid. And she made tons of mittens for us over the years! I still have a couple pair of them and she died about 30 years ago in her 90s. She was still knitting then too.

  2. Great idea! I've had fair luck with knitting socks for others but I could always use a little help. This would work for gloves also. I once knitted mittens for a DIL and was so wrong about the size. She has very small feel so I knitted the mittens accordingly and it turned out that she has very long fingers--quite different from her feet.

  5. I do that for other people's socks. I usually go 2" longer than the little toe. So far it has worked out.

  6. Great idea. I'm tickled I actually got more done on sock recently. There's hope for me.

  7. Neat idea! Of course, I'd have to get back into sock knitting to truly appreciate it...
