Note all the TV antennas. They were a common sight around the world in the 60s and 70s, and slowly disappeared in the 90s, replaced with the large satellite dish.

When did you make the switch to satellite TV versus antenna?

Comments

  1. We skipped right over satellite dish and went to cable.

Because of the price of cable, so many in our neighborhood are going with those small dishes. For many years we weren't allowed dishes, but I guess the state intervened and told the HOAs they couldn't forbid them.

We still do cable. In bad summer weather the dishes don't receive very well.

  2. Such an interesting blend of modern architecture and older in your photos.

We moved from the farm into town in 1988 and that is when we switched from the old antenna on the roof to a dish, because that is how the local company was providing cable in that town. We were thrilled to have more channels available. A few years later we got actual cable and got rid of that little dish.

  3. Great photo!

We've been using a satellite since the early 90s. Before that we subscribed to cable. And before that it was an antenna that picked up the three major networks, but we had to got outside and adjust it each time we changed the channel.

  4. I sure do remember all the antennas one could see on the houses around here... for years. I truthfully don't remember the year I went from antennae to satellite, but it was the best move EVER.

  5. I remember my dad going up on the roof to move the antenna after a wind storm. And, who could forget the one on the TV, wrapped in foil that often included a kitchen knife as a signal booster. Those were the days!

  6. I remember dad on the roof too. Didn't do much good because the wind blew all the time where we lived.

We didn't make the switch from antenna to satellite. We did put the antenna in the attic at this house though. ;)

  7. We resisted the switch for a long time. When we moved to our current area in 2002, we discovered that the only way we could receive any signal was to go with satellite. We're still not huge TV viewers. If we could (legally) get sports games over the internet, I think I could convince my husband to cancel the satellite service.

  9. Oh yeah... the antennae! That's one blast from the past I don't miss a bit, even though we STILL lose signal with a hard rain/snow/wind...

  11. I remember antenna in the attic too. Our house was very tall, the attic was like a 3rd story, you could stand up in it so good place for the antenna. Switched to satellite in late 80's?? Most days I could go without TV.

  12. 1986 when we moved to the lake. A Satellite or a huge tower were our only options to get TV in the boonies. It was one of those black need dishes and if the snow got hung up on it you had to go sweep it off.:)

  14. We just use cable. Other than hubb's sporting events mostly college anything and pro baseball we aren't big tv watchers. But darn we do like a good Jeopardy game!

  15. We had rabbit ears when I was a kid. I also had rabbit ears when I moved out on my own, because I was broke.
