Not Meant To Be. . .

I started the Advent Calendar Scarf three times, but it was not meant to be.

The first day's pattern was ready on Saturday evening, and I printed it out. My "plan" was to knit a narrow version of the scarf, and the buzz on Ravelry before the release stated the revisions necessary for the narrow scarf would be posted.

Saturday evening, the forum was a mass of chatter with nearly every individual who posted throwing out a different cast on number. It was like a feeding frenzy.

I got frustrated.

I threw caution to the wind and cast on the 103 stitches for the full version, using lace-weight yarn and size 2 needles.

I knit the beginning spacer and decided that this was NOT something I was enjoying. I attempted to revise the pattern myself, but ended up putting it aside in frustration and went to bed.

Sunday morning, I noticed that the forum had separate threads for the various cast on numbers: 49, 53, 79, etc. Okay, I thought, now I can do this.

I decided on the 49-stitch scarf, went up a couple of needle sizes and cast on. I got the spacer section knit and part of the first section. Even though it was much faster than the night before, I was still not enjoying working with the lace-weight yarn. I frogged my knitting.

This is a project that I will possibly knit at another time - just not now. It was not meant to be. . .

  1. That happens sometimes. I have some beautiful lace weight yarn that I've been trying to make into a shawl for a couple of years. I abandoned the first attempt. Switched to a new pattern, but set it aside too. I think maybe I'm not enjoying the tiny yarn and small needles.

  3. Maybe that's why I only got to Day 17 in 2010? LOL!

  4. Life is too short and knitting time is too valuable to waste it on a project that is not enjoyable! I can't count the number of lace weight projects I have "put aside." That's possibly the reason I usually knit with DK weight yarn and heavier.

  5. I wouldn't worry about it. I didn't even start, so you did better than I did. It's a massive project for this busy time of year.

  6. Oh, I've had a few of those happen where it just didn't ever seem to want to get going.

  8. Oh darn! I'm sure you'll find another project for that yarn more to your liking...or trade it with someone for a different weight of yarn. Sorry you ended up with so much frogging and frustration!

  9. Sometimes that happens. Oh what am I saying? It happens HERE a lot!

  10. Sometimes I feel the same way about my quilting. But I usually feel guilty for awhile when I set it aside.

  11. I give up very quickly if there is a pattern that I am fighting with.

  12. I have definitely learned to let go of a pattern when I'm not feeling it. We are supposed to enjoy the knit! There are so many lovely things to do and spend out hands and time on ... Happy Knitting!

  13. It's frustrating sometimes when the combination of pattern, yarn, needles, personal well-being, etc. don't line up for a project you plan to work on, isn't it?

My Advent focus is off to a bad start. Sissy was sick Sunday morning, so I couldn't toddle up to the beach church, and tomorrow, we'll have several inches of snow - or ice - so my little church with its mostly elderly congregation will surely close, and I don't go to town in bad weather...

Maybe a snow day is a good day to pull out my favorite Christmas hymns and start my own advent scarf. But perhaps you could suggest a previous year that was quite pleasant-going?
