Sumo is to Japan as football is to the United States. To say it is a popular sport is an understatement. Japan is the only country where sumo is practiced professionally, and the successful wrestlers are revered.

The only sumo wrestling I saw was an on-base sumo tournament, which was by no means, a professional match. It was, however, interesting.

  1. I don't understand why wrestling - not the entertainment enterprise version - isn't more popular here. It's fairly straight-forward and (to my mind) is a good mix of strength, balance and strategy...

  2. I've seen a lot of sports in my life but I've somehow missed sumo wrestling. I guess they don't have any on American TV.

  3. I am not much of a fan of wrestling, but I imagine it was very interesting to see the matches on base. Great shot, by the way.

  6. Well, Nancy, I went to Oklahoma State University which was a wrestling powerhouse (I know...different kind of wrestling, but still there's the grappling thing.) So I like to watch wrestling, but here's what I always wondered about sumo. Aren't those bitty sumo thongs uncomfortable to the wrestlers? It amazed me that they'd throw each other around, but their "coverings" stayed in place. I wish I knew their trick. I have bra straps which won't stay on my shoulders and panty hose which keep trying to sneak to my knees.

  7. My question is did you participate in any sumo wrestling while you were in Japan?
