Scraps, Leftovers, or Remnants

colorful balls of scrap sock yarn
September 2022

I planned to knit baby hats with the growing pile of leftover sock yarn; however, after knitting three hats, I lost interest, and the pile of leftovers grew. Saturday, I assessed the yarn and decided to cast on a Silver Lining hat, which is a double-sided hat that I’ve knit twice.

Of course, this pile of yarn will make more than one hat, but one hat will make a dent in the remnants.

I pulled these colors, determined their weight, and cast on the first section of the hat.

The Silver Lining hat is a mindless knit, and I’m ready for that kind of project.

  1. I've got the same pile of leftovers growing in the stash closet. I never thought of making a hat out of them. I might have to look into that.

  3. This is a good idea to use of the leftovers and it will make a great hat, too!

  4. That's a good plan. When I am done the blankets, I'll have more scraps, I'm sure. A hat would be good.

  6. My grandmother always had some knitting project in the works. And she let me play with the little balls of leftover yarn that collected in a wooden bowl. But I don't remember if she used those leftovers for anything. Hmmmm.

  8. I once made a door wreath by attaching a bunch of little balls to a wire wreath frame (I think I probably just tied them on after securing the loose end with hot glue). Then I stuck an old pair of needles in it. If you want the little leftovers gone that is one way!

  9. I saw something recently that used up small amounts of yarn...for the life of me I cannot recall what it was! I used up quite a bunch of left overs for The Peyton Heart Project a while back and i may have to do that again!

  10. A dent in the scrap pile is always good. A warm hat is even better. I'm going to look at the pattern.

  11. I've used lots of my sock scraps but still have more. Maybe I should try this hat for charity. Goodness knows, we have enough hats for ourselves. Thanks for the pattern link.
    Blessings,

  12. There are always leftovers and I try to use them — both yarn and fabric — but I don’t think I’ve made all that much progress. Sigh.
