Hold On . . .
Mr. Frost taught his students to hold the steering wheel at 10 and 2, and to this day, I find that the most comfortable position to drive. However, that hand position is no longer considered safe. Drivers are now taught to hold the steering wheel at 9 and 3 or 8 and 4. I've tried changing my hand positions, but it is not comfortable, and it doesn't feel like I've got good control over the vehicle in either of the "new" positions.
I suppose the lower positions will prevent the air bag from breaking arms when it activates.
We recently had this conversation with grandson, David, who said that 9/3 or even 8/4 is taught now! I was so surprised--I drive 10/2--it is hard to break decades of a habit! lol
ReplyDeleteDon't know that I was taught to hold the wheel like you do but I do:)
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that hand position is taught differently now. I still do 10 and 2, and on really LONG drives find one hand at noon.
ReplyDeleteIt varies depending upon how long the drive and how tired my arms are. I start out at 10 and 2 but find that I eventually drift to 8 and 4.
ReplyDeleteI was taught 10 and 2 also and it's what I do. I've seen Daughter steering with her knees so I suppose what I am doing is safer than that.
ReplyDeleteI was told by a State Trooper in an defensive driving class that the 10 -2 position interferes with the air bag and if you wear rings they will be thrust into your face. I try to use 8 and 4 and I do not wear rings. :)
ReplyDeleteI was taught 10/2 as well, but never found it comfortable. If I'm cruising (no traffic, country road) I'm usually a one hand on the wheel kinda gal - usually my wrist resting on the wheel at about 12, just keeping the wheel steady, or my right hand resting on the bottom at about 5.
ReplyDeleteIf there's lot of traffic, and I'm on a big multi-lane highway, then I'm two hands, and it's usually 8 and 4, or occasionally 9 and 3.
I've found all of the comments really interesting reading! :-) I'm a 10 and 2 girl, unless it's a really long drive, like from Washington to Nebraska and then I vary all over the wheel to give my arms and hands a break. I usually end up back at 10 and 2 though, out of habit.

Talk about an interesting post. I assume I’m a 10 2. I don’t drive all that much. And I don’t think about where my hands go. My issue with 9 3 is you don’t have much to grab on to. And 8 4 makes me think I might flip my hands to palms up instead palms down. Next time I drive somewhere I’ll try to pay attention. Good post today.
ReplyDeleteI can't even remember what I was taught - most likely 10 & 2. Sometimes I drive that way, sometimes 9 & 3 and sometimes one-handed at 12. I move my hands around a lot!
ReplyDeleteI'm Still a 10 nd 2 girl. and I feel like I'm getting shorter behind the wheel!
