Alpine Shire

Alpine Shire
May 2021

"Shire" is a term seldom used in the United States, but whenever I hear it, I think of J.R.R. Tolkien"s Middle-earth in The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings. How I loved reading of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and Frodo. I plan to reread the series this year.

The color way of this ball of Perth is called Alpine Shire.

If you've read the series, which of Tolkien's character(s) do you like?

  1. I am a huge Tolkien junkie myself. I even have a beautiful replica of Sting and a cloak made from the same weavers in NZ that made the original ones for the movies. Radagast is the character I most identify with. I love being surrounded by animals and potions. I wouldn't have dealt with all the drama very well either. I'm not the hero type.

  2. That is a yummy color way! I immediately thought of Tolkien too. LOL I've read the series twice, but have watched the movies several times.

  3. Dennis read the series way back in 1974 when he was in the Air Force. He owned the books and I read them right after we were married in 1978. Then, each of our kids read them as they were old enough. They are all bookworms like Dennis and I. Imagine the excitement in our house when we heard they were making a "real" movie based on the books. Dennis and I had seen several through the years and were disappointed but not in the NZ series. It was so true to the books. We have all read them several times through and as each movie premiered, we attended as a family. I love having that common bond with our kids. Frodo is my favorite because he looks just like our Alex. But Gandolf the Grey is very close for his heroism.
    Blessings,

  6. Lovely yarn. I, personally, have a hard time reading Tolkien. I just find his pacing too slow.

  8. I love those books, too. I read each in the series while pregnant (4x) and each time it was a delight. I like the friends of Frodo, Pippin and Merriweather because they grow up and it is a good journey.
These socks will keep you warm while you reread the series again!

  9. Oh you temptress! That yarn is fabulous. Unfortunately we had such a mild winter - I wore my wool socks but not often. Sigh. I’m still trying to finish a crocheted doll shawl. It’s good for using up leftover sock yarn though.
