Resisting Temptation

crab apples

If I hadn't given all of my canning jars away, I might have been tempted to pick some of these apples to make crab apple jelly.

Several years ago, I picked crab apples from the trees surrounding the parking lot at Central Wyoming College (CWC). They made the best jelly.

Have you picked fruit from trees in public areas that was going to waste?

  1. I say buy some canning jars!!!

I have not picked from public areas...other than various berries along paths. I'm disappointed that our apple crop this year will not be enough to even make one jar of applesauce!

  4. I haven't, but my husband has picked apples from a tree on the golf course here. It's always loaded with small tart apples.

  5. The only thing I ever came across was mulberries and a few very sad looking blackberries.

I once ate an orange from a tree in the "wild" --- not likely to do that again. It was SOUR!!!

  7. I have picked apples here at the lake a few times, but I don’t can much anymore. I’ve given most of my canning jars away too. Blessings, Betsy

  8. I used to make crab apple jelly when we had a tree at our old house. It was yummy. All my canning jars are used for dyeing wool or making soap!!

  10. My Nanny used to take us to a place she called Apple Hill (just a park with some crab apple trees) and we'd pick them so she could make crabapple pie and crab apple jelly. There's were also several places with wild raspberries we'd pick for jam.

  13. No, but it's tempting. Driving down our street yesterday, I noticed apples in the gutter; what a waste! You are reminding me I need to get busy and make some freezer jam!
