Virtual Advent Tour - Popcorn Balls

It’s Day 2 of Sprite Write’s Virtual Advent Tour where bloggers from around the world share traditions they enjoy during the holiday season.

Food and holidays go well together, and in my family, homemade popcorn balls are a delicious tradition. My sister (Marilyn) and her husband (Harold) make several batches during the Christmas season. Over the years, they've fine-tuned the process for efficiently making the popcorn balls.
Marilyn pops the corn
Harold prepares the syrup mixture
Marilyn fills a roasting pan with popcorn while Harold carefully
monitors the temperature of the syrup mixture.

Several years ago for a family reunion, favorite family recipes were complied into a book. Now when someone wistfully mentions a recipe, the response is usually, "It's in the book!"

Marilyn pours the hot syrup mixture into the roaster filled
with popped corn. She uses spoons to coat the popped
corn. Marilyn slightly wets her hands, and popcorn balls
are shaped and then wrapped in plastic wrap.

This recipe creates a soft popcorn ball, not the rock hard ones that come from the store. I think it's the honey and vanilla that create the unique taste and texture and makes them especially delicious.

  2. Oh YUM! I agree that the soft popcorn balls are so much more delicious. My homemade tradition is a wreath cookie. It's a cream cheese spritz cookie decorated. I probably will wait to make them right before Christmas so we don't eat them all.

  9. Oh I love popcorn balls, but have never even tried to think of making them! Now ... well, who knows?

One of my nieces made a family cookbook a few years back - they are really a wonderful thing, as you said, if nothing else, just for the memories. Happy Advent, Nancy!
