Easy Money?

My niece snapped this photo on Saturday and asked if the schools in Wyoming raised money by selling mattresses. I haven't seen anything like this. Have you?

In my 33 years of teaching, I organized many fund-raisers: bake sales, magazine sales, concessions stands, T-shirt sales, poster sales, car washes, candle sales, chocolate sales, etc. While the groups made money, we never found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Perhaps, I should have tried mattresses. . .

  1. Interesting...Never heard of that...would be a bit harder for door to door sales

  2. So....I wonder how many mattresses you have to sell before you make a good profit. Yikes. I agree with Bev, in that mattresses seem like they would be a hard sell.

  5. Definitely a fund raiser that I've never heard of. I just can't imagine that would be a good way to raise money unless all of the mattresses were donated to them. Funny!

  6. Yes Our high school does the same mattress sale. Kind of odd but it must work or they wouldn't bother. I loved the cheesecake fundraiser my self!

  7. Gives me the willies just to think they might be selling donated mattresses. Surely not, but I'd probably still wonder. And no, it isn't something I've ever heard of. At least it's useful, unlike stationary and wrapping paper.

    1. Just to clarify, my niece said these were new mattresses from the Denver Mattress Company.

  8. My retail boss used to say, "We cater to the whims of the market." Hmmmm that opens up all sorts of questions.

  9. It's a bit like a venue hire and small commission deal I guess. Someone else doing the set up, selling and dealing so it's low on volunteer help and more reliable than sending everyone out with order forms and money collecting. It also has the advantage of being a one weekend wonder I suppose rather than a multi week co-ordinated effort. I found it hard to get good commitment and helpers for fund raisers and it was always left up to the usual few. Maybe this is the case in America too now where everyone is crying time-poor? Do you think?

  11. I saw an advertisement like this one a year or so ago in Utah, and was as perplexed as you are. At least the kids don't go door-to-door! :-)

  12. I wonder how well it works? Here the kids just sell expensive stuff like $8.00 boxes of candy. :)

  14. What a hoot. Hope they got a lot off of each one because it would be a much higher price item. I loved when my kid's sold citrus fruit trucked up from Florida. Very good eating but lots of fruit at one time. Yum!
