Annual Spool Count

Two empty 3000 yard spools amounted to the
thread used in 2022: full spool for comparison

I emptied only two spools/cones of thread in 2022, but one of the spools was new and held 3,000 yards of thread and the other had about half or 1,500 yards. The empty spools/cones allowed me to make fourteen Quilts of Valor and some small projects for myself and friends as well as do some mending.

It’s interesting to compare my thread usage over the years.

            2021 spools

            2020 spools

            2019 spools

            2018 spools

            2017 spools

On Wednesday, I cleaned and oiled the older sewing machine and swapped it with the one I normally take to retreats. I like to use each of them similar amounts of time.

  2. It's amazing how far those spools go. I'm on one spool I installed not long after Mom's surgery, which was spring of 2022. It's still going so I bet I will make the year anniversary

  3. That is a LOT of thread. Nancy, thank you for making all of those Quilts of Valor. As military veterans wife, I know the love the men feel from the quilts.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  4. Whoa....I've never used a big on before. I do find that the Connecting Threads spools last me forever and they are not nearly as big as yours. It seems like I'm filling up bobbins all the time (which I hate to do) but the spool itself never runs out even when I use them for machine quilting which eats up thread like crazy. It's like magic.

  5. I've not used those large spools. I must add my thanks for making so many Quilts of Valor, and again thank you for inspiring me to start. Our little group has presented 6 QOV to veterans and active duty soldiers just since Veteran's Day. It's one of the most fulfilling things I've been involved with, mainly because the recipients usually are so touched. I just received a wonderful thank you letter from one of them yesterday. It brought tears to my eyes.

  6. I think it is very cool how you keep track of the spools--this way is much easier! lol That means you stitched several miles which is a lot of piecing!

  8. Holy cow. That is a lot of sewing. A long time ago I knew a woman who machine quilted for others and charged by the amount of thread she used.

  9. That sure is a lot of thread. It was interesting to look back at prior years...but of course spool sizes vary, etc. You sure do produce an amazing number of quilts each year~

  10. Whoot! Whoot! I just remembered to take a picture of my spools which should be in Monday's post. I like to use Mettler's cotton thread and I too have started using the cones. It makes for fewer spools but that is fine with me. I'm trying to use up small dribs and drabs left on spools but not making great progress yet!
