Track of the Cat by Nevada Barr  👍
Cop Town by Karin Slaughter  👍

The Empty House by Rosamunde Pilcher 👍
American Fire by Monica Hesse   👍 👍
Get Your Sh*t Together by Sarah Knight   👎 👎
A Superior Death by Nevada Barr   👍
Running on Empty by Christine Musello   👎 👎
The Guilty by David Baldacci   👍 👍
Loving Eleanor by Susan Wittig Albert

I try to select at least one non-fiction book each month. Sadly, the two on this list were not worth my time, and I listened to more than half of each of them. Two thumbs down is actually very generous.

I just started reading Loving Eleanor, a fictionalized autobiography detailing the relationship between Eleanor Roosevelt and her friend, AP Reporter Lorena Hickock. The book is based on thousands of actual letters exchanged between Eleanor and "Hick" over the years of their intimate relationship. Their story illustrates that history holds many secrets.

Have you read any surprising and/or scandalous books?

  1. Nothing scandalous...am reading "Empty Mansions" which is interesting (I had not heard of the Clarks). I could not get through The Great Alone. I'm on the wait list on Overdrive for White Houses by Amy Bloom which is another book about Eleanor and Hick.

  2. I am on a true crime kick since I listened to I'll Be Gone in the Dark. I am totally ashamed because I always considered it a trashy genre but it is certainly brain candy. I'm hooked.

  3. Thank you for stopping my blog!! Looks like the beginning of some very pretty socks. I have been reading some Nora Roberts, but her story is pretty much the same in each book. I found a new author, Liane Moriarty, and her use of language is very enjoyable.

  8. Have you read the Joe Pickett series by C.J. Box? Joe is a Wyoming game warden and he is always finding dead animals and bodies. There are 16 books in the series. I couldn't put them down!!!

  9. Goodness, what a lot of books you get through! I love my audio books but I don’t seem to get a lot of listening time. The Eleanor book sounds intriguing. I’ll have to put it on my wish list.

  10. I’m ashamed I haven’t read much. I don’t have much “alone” time to read in the summer.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  11. I recognise a couple of the authors listed, Karin Slaughter and David B, and have enjoyed their writings. Have just finished the final book in the series by Chelsea Cain, about Detctive Archie Sheriden and serial killer Gretchen Lowell. I read the first book out of sequence and enjoyed it so much I then had to track them all down to read them in order. These books are a bit gruesome in places, so not for the faint hearted! I also enjoy books about Tudor Royalty, and like your other reader, adore the Joe Picket series.

  12. I'll be interested to hear how Loving Eleanor is. I read a lot of history, so I'm picky about historical fiction. But Wittig is a good writer.
