Preparing Diversions

six knitting projects cast on and started
June 2017
Last week, I prepared several knitting "kits": shawls, cowls, and house socks to work on while recovering from a total knee replacement later this month. Perhaps I will not feel like knitting, but these projects are cast on and ready should I want a diversion. I chose easy and intermediate patterns and may even fall back knitting simple dishcloths.

My iPad and Kindle are loaded with audio books and ebooks, and I purchased a few word search pads from the Dollar Store. I've added some movies and documentaries to my Netflix account. A jigsaw puzzle is handy, and after a few weeks of recuperation, I'll probably feel like working on it, too.

I will not be driving for six - eight weeks; thus, I'll be sticking close to home other than catching a ride to physical therapy appointments. These diversions and projects should keep me from getting cabin fever.

  4. Good planning! When is your surgery? My mom has had two knee replacements. The recovery was painful at first, but went very quickly. And the results have been awesome.

  6. My goodness you are very organized! The last surgery I had was two years ago when I had my pacemaker implanted. Since they told me I would be up and about that afternoon, I didn't plan any diversions. Big mistake! Since I ended up in the hospital for five days and down for several weeks after that, I didn't have anything prepared. My husband didn't have a clue what I was asking for when I requested my yarn and needles. I really do need to educate him in knitting terminology. Ha ha! I'm so glad you've made so many good plans. And maybe you'll be up and about quicker than you think.
    Blessings, Betsy

  7. Good planning for that recuperation time! You will still get cabin fever, but I'm sure this will help a lot. Hopefully you have friends to stop by and visit to help with that cabin fever.

  10. I hope your surgery goes well (it will!) and that you will bounce right back. I, too, made knitting kits in January for my foot surgery in February. It is wonderful to have everything ready. That is until you change your mind about what you want to knit with that certain yarn.

  12. This is exactly what I did for my total knee replacement last August. It was great to get all my Christmas gifts made while recovering; didn't feel like I was wasting time while healing. The surgery's so worth it--good luck in your recovery period. You'll do well.

  15. Nancy, I will be thinking of you making a speedy recovery. I love your prepped knitting kits. I do that before I go on holiday, but recovery and a combatant of cabin fever make excellent sense.

  17. Well done on being so prepared. I wish you well for a speedy recovery. Exercise, exercise was the key for Linda and me in recovery. I started simple feet exercises as soon as I was aware of my surroundings after surgery.

  20. You will be able to knit and keep busy. I hope your surgery and rehab goes well! I have heard that after the replacement you have less pain immediately. Several of the carvers have had it done recently. It is a good time of year at least you won't have to worry about ice and slipping. I hope your freezer is full of prepared meals too! :)
