Simple Beauty

April 2014
Last week, I was stuck by the simple beauty of the morning sun casting a shadow on the wall near my grandmother's china cabinet.

The cabinet is probably close to 100 years old: I inherited it from my mother, who inherited from her mother. I remember when Uncle Otto (my mother's brother) delivered the cabinet to the farm on a bitter cold day in December. Wrapped in old quilts and blankets, the cabinet had traveled in the back of his pick-up from South Dakota. Mom was afraid the glass would crack when the cabinet was brought into the house.

I, too, worried about the glass when I moved the cabinet to my home 20 years ago. The glass in the door has dimples and waves in it, and the side pieces are curved. The glass and finish are original. This is the oldest piece of furniture that I own.

  2. That is a beautiful picture AND a beautiful cabinet. I love that old glass that is wavy and bubbled.

Looks like it has been cared for with very loving hands over the years.

  4. Beautiful! I don't think they make furniture like that anymore. Everything is throw-away these days--obsolete before you have it moved into place. I have an old hallway mirror stand that I bought at an estate sale in Germany. It has the original mirror, flaws and all. I love that wavy old glass!

  5. Beautiful shadow! Your china cabinet is in a great spot and takes center stage on the wall. You are fortunate that it's in such good shape; it's traveled many miles!

  8. The cabinet is gorgeous. I love that is an old family piece. Even more special. I have been missing the sunlight. I didn't have much time today, but I don't sit near any natural light, so I found a spot (inside) to knit in for a little bit at lunch today. I felt happier even having that for just a little bit.

  11. Nancy, I have a cabinet that's almost identical to yours, and it has 1912 stamped on the back. It was my grandmother's also. Is your glass held in by rope? Our door had to be replaced after our home was burglarized some years ago. (They tossed a rock through the window that hit the door.) Great photo!
